Katy Maurer

LPC (she/her)7 years of experience

I am a compassionate therapist who is deeply committed to helping individuals feel heard, understood, and supported. I believe in creating a warm, welcoming space where clients can show up as their authentic selves without fear of judgment. My approach is collaborative and honest, and I value building genuine connections that foster trust and growth. I work alongside my clients to help them navigate challenges, gain insight, and develop practical tools that support meaningful and lasting change in their lives.

First session

In our first session, you can expect a welcoming and supportive space where we begin getting to know one another. We will discuss what brought you to therapy, your current concerns, and what you hope to gain from our work together. I will also ask questions about your background, relevant history, and any previous therapy experiences to better understand your needs. The first session is a time for us to build rapport and begin establishing trust. We will review important information such as confidentiality, scheduling, and any policies, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. There is no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with. This session is about starting at a pace that feels right for you. By the end of our first meeting, we will begin identifying initial goals and discussing how we might move forward in a way that supports your growth and healing.

Strengths

My greatest strengths as a therapist include empowering clients to recognize their own resilience and capacity for growth. I am a strong and attentive listener, committed to truly understanding each client’s experience without judgment. I strive to create a safe, supportive environment where individuals feel respected, accepted, and heard. I also believe in addressing the “elephant in the room” in a warm, thoughtful, and caring way. When something important needs to be said, I approach it with honesty and compassion, helping clients gain clarity while feeling supported rather than criticized. This balance of empathy and directness allows me to foster meaningful insight, accountability, and lasting change.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is someone who is genuinely open to growth and willing to make meaningful changes in their life. They understand that therapy is an active process and are ready to engage, even when the work feels challenging. They are not afraid to be called out in a supportive and respectful way, recognizing that gentle honesty and accountability are essential parts of progress. I value clients who show up authentically and are honest about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This honesty helps create a strong therapeutic relationship and allows us to address concerns more effectively. My ideal client is also able to communicate openly if something comes up; whether it’s a concern about the therapeutic process, a scheduling issue, or a reaction to something discussed in session. Above all, this client is committed to the process, even if they don’t have everything figured out yet. They are willing to reflect, take feedback, and practice new skills outside of sessions. While they don’t need to be perfect or have all the answers, they are motivated to better understand themselves and create positive, lasting change in their lives.

Treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I incorporate a person-centered approach in my sessions by creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients feel genuinely accepted and understood. I practice unconditional positive regard by valuing each client as they are, without criticism or assumptions, which helps build trust and openness. This supportive environment allows clients to explore their thoughts and emotions freely and move toward growth at their own pace.

Trauma-Informed Care

I incorporate trauma-informed care into my sessions by prioritizing safety, trust, and collaboration in the therapeutic relationship. I recognize the impact trauma can have on thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and I approach each client with sensitivity and respect for their experiences. By fostering empowerment and offering choice, I support clients in regaining a sense of control and building resilience at a pace that feels safe for them.

EMDR

I incorporate EMDR into my sessions by helping clients process and reframe distressing memories in a structured, supportive way. Through the use of bilateral stimulation, I guide clients in accessing and integrating difficult experiences so they become less overwhelming over time. This approach allows clients to heal from past trauma while building more adaptive beliefs about themselves and their experiences.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) into my sessions by helping clients identify and understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we work to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and develop more balanced, realistic perspectives. This approach empowers clients with practical tools and strategies to manage distress and create meaningful, lasting change.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I incorporate dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) into my sessions by helping clients build skills in mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. I balance acceptance and change by validating clients’ experiences while also supporting them in developing healthier coping strategies. This approach equips clients with practical tools to navigate intense emotions, improve relationships, and increase overall stability.
