First off, thanks for reading my profile! I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor. I spent most of my career working with people struggling with mental health issues, relationship problems and addictive behavior. I try to be "down to earth" and more directive in therapy because I think you want to get your issues solved as quickly as possible and the sooner, the better for you. I believe we, as humans, can benefit from having someone to talk to at any point in our lives and I'm always up for a good chat.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
Once we’ve gotten to know each other, I’ll learn what it is that brings you to therapy, discuss any prior attempts and the outcomes, and figure out what steps we might need to take. I try to just be relaxed and fun so that we're not ALL business. I think casual sessions work best where we can have a comfortable atmosphere and talk without a lot of fuss. We'll make a list of things we might want to start with and, likely, I'll give you an assignment to do for our next session (nothing hard, mind you). We'll use your assignment as a base to work from and build on what we do together.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
I don't have “the answer" to everything. As a provider, I want to work as a team on whatever we're doing. Sometimes I come on an answer for you, other times you'll come up with a solution that I didn't see coming. Either way, we work together on the goal. I don't like to use a lot of "psychobabble" in my language, preferring to be more “average-Joe-on-the-street”. I’ll use situations, events and history from your life as the best way to explain things. I'd also like to think that there's not a lot of difference between myself and my clients except that maybe I've already been down the road you're traveling now.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
I work with adults who are seeking to make a change in their lives because: 1) they need to solve a problem that bugs them 2) it's time address something that hasn't been working for a long time 3) just want someone to help them get moving to a better, more healthy lifestyle. I also offer coaching for certain areas of life (this is a self-pay service). If you're ready to make a change, let's get to work. Are you ready???
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT is the basis for most things I do. Here we learn to challenge our thinking, change our behaviors and gain new insights to how we respond to all kinds of situations by understanding the relationship of our thinking, our beliefs and emotions. I like to have CBT "tools" for clients to learn to use and apply the tools where necessary.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivation Interviewing allows all persons to feel heard and respected while working on solving problems. I like to use MI when we're working on some behaviors that are contrary to the the stated goals. We can examine the motivation behind the behavior and find a solution. It can help us get into a mindset of real, lasting change.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
DBT focuses on building a "life worth living" by teaching skills in mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. These points reduce self-destructive behaviors and improve overall functioning, emotional control, and relationships. We work on minimizing life-threatening actions, learn to manage intense emotions, gain skills to tolerate a crisis without making things worse, and effectively navigating pesky relationships.

Kevin is sincere, humorous, challenging, and engaging in his approach. He makes me feel comfortable to explore issues that I would not have previously considered. He shares excellent resources and gives me homework that actually adds value to my mental health journey. I enjoy his solutions-oriented methods and look forward to many more sessions.

Just the right fit for my needs. Has alot of the same things that I like and believe in. Very like minded and great at talking and getting myself to understand and express myself and make me think in a way that I haven't thought about certain things before.

Kevin is a wonderful and effective therapist. This is the first time I ever talked to a therapist. He lead me well through the session and I feel a very good connection with him. I’m looking forward to get his report and go over it. I am also looking forward to meeting with him again next week.
