Kailla Rowell
Are you longing for healthier relationships—with others and with yourself? Do you find it easier to offer compassion to others than to yourself? Perhaps past experiences are making it difficult to feel present or imagine what comes next. I’m Kailla Rowell, LICSW, and I welcome you to Rooted & Healing—a brave space to explore your story, reconnect with yourself, and begin your healing journey. I’m passionate about supporting Black and Brown womxn as they navigate relationships, life transitions, and the weight of expectations.
I love to use art and music therapy as an enhancer for my creative clients interested in using expressive art tools during their healing journey.
We all need a “crown adjustment” sometimes: space to pause, feel supported, and remember who we are. Together, we’ll honor your experiences, build on your strengths, and develop tools to help you move from surviving toward a life where you can thrive as your authentic self. For clients drawn to creativity, I incorporate art, music, and expressive activities as tools for reflection, connection, and healing. Your journey is your own, and we’ll make room for the ways you feel most comfortable expressing yourself.
First session
Your first session is a space to slow down, connect, and begin building trust. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, what you’re hoping for, and any questions or concerns you may have. There’s no pressure to share everything at once—you set the pace. I’ll also review confidentiality, boundaries, and how therapy works, and may ask questions to better understand your experiences, strengths, and current stressors. Together, we’ll begin identifying goals that align with your needs and values. Most importantly, this session is about creating a safe, supportive relationship. You don’t need to prepare anything—just come as you are. We’ll take it one step at a time.
Strengths
Did Black Panther reveal all his secrets? I’ll share one of mine: my superpower is creating space for you to feel seen, supported, and comfortable being yourself. I bring warmth, creativity, and honesty to our work—and while there’s room for laughter, I take your healing seriously. My personal and professional experiences shape how I listen and connect. Together, we’ll make room for your story, recognize your strengths, and work toward the changes that matter to you.
Ideal clients
I am best positioned to support individuals and couples who are seeking deeper self-understanding, emotional healing, and sustainable change. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. I often work with clients navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief, relationship challenges, identity exploration, and the impact of trauma. You may be someone who holds a lot for others, struggles to prioritize your own needs, or feels disconnected from yourself or your relationships. My ideal clients are open to reflection, curious about their inner world, and interested in building healthier boundaries, emotional regulation skills, and more fulfilling connections. Whether you’re seeking clarity, relief, or growth, therapy with me is collaborative, trauma-informed, and rooted in care, culture, and community.
Treatment methods
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
In my practice, I integrate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to help clients manage intense emotions, navigate relationships, and respond to difficult situations with greater intention. I balance validating clients’ experiences with supporting changes that align with their goals. I incorporate mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. This may include helping clients pause and notice what they are feeling, practice grounding during stressful moments, identify emotional triggers, or communicate their needs and boundaries clearly. We practice these skills together and explore how to apply them between sessions. My approach is trauma-informed and culturally responsive. I consider how clients’ identities, environments, and lived experiences shape their responses, and we choose skills that feel practical and meaningful to them.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
In my practice, I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we identify patterns that may contribute to distress and explore more balanced ways of thinking and responding. I support clients in examining unhelpful thoughts, developing coping strategies, and taking manageable steps toward their goals. This may include practicing problem-solving, increasing engagement in meaningful activities, or gradually approaching situations they have been avoiding. We practice skills during sessions and identify ways to use them in everyday life. My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive. I acknowledge the real challenges clients face while helping them build flexibility, confidence, and tools that fit their lived experiences.
