My name is Olubusola (Olu) Akinwumi and I am a compassionate and client-centered Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). I specialize in providing mental health care through a holistic, supportive, and evidence-based approach. My goal is to create a safe and welcoming space where clients feel heard, empowered, and supported as they work toward healing and personal growth.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, my primary goal is to create a comfortable, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you can feel safe to share openly. During this initial meeting, I’ll take time to get to know you—your background, current challenges, goals for therapy, and any concerns you may have about the process. We’ll discuss what has brought you to psychiatry, explore your mental health history, and identify specific areas you would like to focus on. I’ll also explain my therapeutic approach, answer any questions you may have, and review confidentiality so you know what to expect moving forward. By the end of the session, we’ll begin to outline a personalized care plan and determine the next steps together. My aim is for you to leave the session feeling heard, supported, and hopeful about the path ahead.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

One of my greatest strengths as a clinician is my ability to create a warm, safe, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel truly heard and understood. I approach my clients with compassion, patience, and cultural sensitivity, allowing them to open up comfortably at their own pace. What stands out about my therapeutic approach is my ability to blend evidence-based methods—such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychoeducation, and solution-focused strategies—with a personalized and collaborative style. I focus on helping clients not only manage their symptoms but also understand the root causes of their struggles and build long-term coping skills. I am also highly committed to empowering clients through education, self-awareness, and practical tools they can apply outside of sessions. My clients often share that they feel more confident, hopeful, and equipped to handle challenges after working with me. Ultimately, my goal is to guide each client toward meaningful progress and lasting emotional well-being.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I am best positioned to serve clients who are ready to take an active role in their mental health journey. I work well with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, and life transitions. Many of my clients seek support for emotional regulation, stress management, and improving self-esteem. I also work with clients who are looking to better understand their thought patterns and behaviors, and who are open to learning practical tools they can use both in and outside of sessions. Whether a client’s goal is to manage daily stressors, navigate major life changes, or address long-standing mental health concerns, I offer a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space to work collaboratively toward their goals. My approach is empathetic, solution-focused, and tailored to each person’s unique needs, helping clients build healthier coping skills, improve emotional balance, and foster lasting positive change.

My treatment methods

Psychoeducation

believe that providing clients with accurate information about their mental health conditions, symptoms, treatment options, and coping strategies empowers them to actively participate in their own recovery. In my practice, I use psychoeducation to help clients better understand their diagnoses, normalize their experiences, and reduce feelings of shame or fear. I often incorporate psychoeducation when working with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, or mood disorders, and I tailor the information based on their needs, health literacy, and readiness to learn. Psychoeducation helps clients feel more in control, increases treatment engagement, and supports lasting progress in therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the core treatment approaches I utilize in my practice. I appreciate its structured, evidence-based framework and its effectiveness in addressing a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and mood disorders. In my clinical work, I use CBT to help clients identify and challenge negative thought patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and change unhelpful behaviors. My approach often begins with helping clients increase their awareness of the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. From there, we work collaboratively to recognize cognitive distortions, reframe unhelpful thoughts, and practice problem-solving skills.
