New to Grow
I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor for around 15 years. I am grateful to have found this career because it is my passion. I have mostly worked in the mental health field but also have a few years of experience in drug and alcohol counseling. I can also provide information, education and support from the drug and alcohol field along with my knowledge and training in the mental health field. I hope to create a safe, comfortable, laid-back space where you are able to talk about the day or talk about the harder topics and know it all stays with me only. My style of counseling is having a purposeful conversation where I can suggest new ways to cope or new ways to understand yourself and/or others.
My goal for our first session is to introduce a space for you to feel safe and comfortable. My hope is to get to know you during this time and will ask you a bunch of questions. You know all the answers to these questions because it is all about you. I will also start discussing your therapy goals for our time together. In this space there is no judgement on what you are thinking and/or feeling, and no judgement on your past or decisions you made yesterday. I know therapy is usually a serious time but I think having time to make a joke or be goofy is necessary also.
I have learned so much from my time be a therapist and have been amazed on how much my clients have taught me. I am always learning and hope to use my knowledge to help my next client. I have experience with that harsh, critical voice in your head saying horrible things to you, to being so angry you feel like you are going to explode, or never feeling good enough for anyone or yourself, with feeling like every moment of everyday is exhausting and no matter what you do you cannot get ahead. Life is really hard and having trauma, low self-esteem or a toxic relationship is a lot to handle. I want to help you reframe your negative thoughts and focus on your strengths. There have been times you have handled everything and you can do it again. I will also challenge you if you decide to bring excuses and justifications to this time. All of this is to help you.
My ideal client only needs to have an open mind, a willingness to be honest and open to change. I have worked through so many different challenges with my clients like learning how to function again after a bad bout of depression, help calm the anxiety from work, from a relationship, family or from it being just another day of the week. Anyone wanting to understand their identity, manage the challenges during life transitions, grief from losing someone you loved so much, grieve the loss of a relationship or a beloved pet are welcome. Recently I have been focusing more on helping my clients learn to manage and cope with trauma, understand the characteristics of a narcissistic parent or partner and the importance of communication skills.
Other specialties
I identify as
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I will focus on the negative thoughts, negative self-talk and use cognitive restructuring or reframing to change these thoughts to be more positive or neutral. I like to identify your self-talk (that little voice in your head) and challenge this self-talk to help improve one's self-esteem and confidence.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I feel DBT has so many benefits including using your "wise mind," along with using a whole lot of mindfulness with other techniques to improve one's ability to better cope with your emotions and improve your ability to tolerate uncomfortable feelings.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
I will meet you where you are and where you are able to start, at the pace you would like to go and help you create change.
Strength-Based
We all have strengths. No matter our insecurities or low self-esteem, we all have strengths. Let's focus on your attributes, resilience and strengths to improve on what you want to change or learn.
