New to Grow
My name is Rica Avery, I am a licensed professional counselor. I graduated from Trinity Washington University where I received a Master's of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; in addition to receiving a Bachelor's of Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Sciences from The Catholic University of America. My mission is to educate, empower and elevate individuals within my community to develop the necessary skills required to effectively promote community development, mental health awareness and spiritual growth.
During our first session together, the main focus will be on getting to know you and creating a safe, supportive space where you can begin sharing your story. You don’t need to prepare anything in advance—we will go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
I approach grief counseling as a collaborative, compassionate process tailored to each client’s unique experience of loss. I recognize that no two grief journeys are the same. My sessions are built around each client’s story, culture, values, and pace rather than a “one-size-fits-all” model. While grief is never about “moving on,” I help clients find ways to honor their loss while also rediscovering hope, connection, and meaning in their lives. This often leads to improved emotional regulation, renewed purpose, and stronger relationships.
As a grief therapist, I am best positioned to serve clients who are navigating the pain of loss and seeking a safe, compassionate space to process their emotions. I work well with individuals who may feel overwhelmed by sadness, numbness, or guilt, or those who struggle with the changes that loss has brought to their identity, relationships, or daily life.
I find fulfillment in using my knowledge and spirituality to assist people on their healing journey by specializing in grief therapy. I focus on providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to individuals navigating the complex process of grieving a significant loss in their lives.
