"No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man." - Heraclitus I love that quote because it reminds me that change is inevitable. I am a Grief and Loss Educator and Counselor specializing in healing loss stemming from broken dreams, broken hearts and broken relationships. From these breaks comes possible depression, anxiety and trauma. I believe that YOU are the expert in your life and my job is to come alongside in helping you discover your inner strength to find peace and meaning in a world that can be opainful and sometimes doesn't make sense. My name is Tedi Newman and I'm from a small town in Northeast Tennessee where I stayed until going to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. I was able to travel the world with corporate America before discovering a passionate career in counseling in my early 40s. Since getting my Masters in Counseling, I have worked with Women experiencing depression and anxiety, Grief and Trauma, Pet Loss, Domestic Violence, and Foster Care, I would be honored to hold your story for our time together and welcome the opportunity hold space for your story.
In our first session together, we will discuss what brought you to counseling and how your life will be different after our time together. We will introduce techniques in mindfulness which will help you stay grounded and in the present for the session and give you something tangible you can use afterwards. If you've had mental health services in the past, we'll talk about what worked and what hasn't.
My strength as your counselor is to be in that space with you, hear your story without judgment and work through your struggles and challenges. We will identify healthy people, places, conversations and ways of coping that will help you manage your reason for coming to therapy and become more intentional with your mental wellness.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
This method has proven to be more successful in that it allows for life's inevitable events to happen while you work on more adaptive responses leading to psychological flexibility. It promotes a life that fits in line with your values, and feels authentically you. “The only way out is through” – Robert Frost
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
How we think is how we feel and how we act. This method helps clients realize thoughts are thoughts and it's how we interpret them that matters. CBT aims to identify distortions and replace them with more positive, rational ways of thinking. I have extensive CBT clinical training and used in clinical settings for 15 years.

She was recommended by my EAP program. Tedi was very knowledgeable about our geographical "norms" and "expectations" as a daughter and wife. She listened and held space while I told my story.
