Rahab Mbugua
Welcome! I'm a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) dedicated to helping adults find hope, healing, and lasting emotional wellness. I believe seeking mental health care is a sign of strength, and my goal is to create a space where you feel heard, respected, and never judged. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, stress, grief, insomnia, and other mental health concerns. My approach combines compassionate listening with evidence-based psychiatric care and thoughtful medication management when appropriate. Every treatment plan is personalized because no two people have the same story. Whether you're reaching out for the first time or returning to care after a difficult experience, I'll meet you where you are. Together, we'll work toward helping you feel more balanced, confident, and hopeful about your future.
First session
Your first appointment is a conversation. My priority is getting to know you as a whole person, not just your symptoms. We'll discuss what brought you to treatment, your current concerns, your medical and mental health history, previous treatments, medications, lifestyle, sleep, stressors, and your goals for care. I'll take time to answer your questions and explain my recommendations so you understand your treatment options. If medication is appropriate, we'll discuss the benefits, possible side effects, and what to expect moving forward. If medication isn't the best next step, we'll talk about other evidence-based approaches and additional resources that may help. Before the session ends, we'll create a personalized treatment plan together and schedule appropriate follow-up care. My goal is for you to leave feeling informed, supported, and hopeful.
Strengths
I believe the best mental health care happens through collaboration, trust, and compassion. I take time to truly listen, understand your experiences, and provide care without judgment. Many clients tell me they appreciate that I explain things clearly and never make them feel rushed. I combine evidence-based psychiatric treatment with a practical, whole-person approach that considers your physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, culture, and daily life. Rather than simply prescribing medication, I work with you to find solutions that fit your goals and values. I will gently challenge unhelpful patterns when needed while always ensuring you feel supported and respected. My goal is to empower you with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to make meaningful progress and build long-term emotional wellness.
Ideal clients
I work with adults who are ready to improve their mental health and quality of life. Many of my clients are experiencing anxiety, depression, chronic stress, burnout, mood changes, trauma, grief, sleep difficulties, or major life transitions. Some are seeking care for the first time, while others are looking for a fresh start after previous treatment didn't fully meet their needs. My ideal client values a collaborative approach and wants to understand their mental health rather than simply receive a prescription. They are open to honest conversations, evidence-based treatment, and working together to create realistic, achievable goals. Whether you're a busy professional, caregiver, student, healthcare worker, or someone navigating life's challenges, I strive to provide compassionate, individualized care that helps you feel more balanced, confident, and hopeful. If you're ready to take the next step toward better mental wellness, I'd be honored to support you on your journey.
Treatment methods
Supportive
I provide a safe, judgment-free space where you can openly discuss what's been weighing on you. Together, we'll explore life's challenges, build on your strengths, develop healthy coping skills, and find practical ways to manage stress while working toward your personal goals.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT techniques to help you recognize how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another. Together, we'll identify unhelpful thinking patterns, develop healthier ways of coping, and practice practical strategies you can use in everyday life to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress.
Motivational Interviewing
Change isn't always easy, and it's normal to feel uncertain. I use motivational interviewing to help you explore your goals, strengthen your confidence, and identify your own reasons for making positive changes. My role is to support and guide you—not pressure you—so that your treatment reflects what matters most to you.
