Mengisteab Eyehalik
Welcome! I'm Mengisteab, a licensed therapist with a background in psychology and clinical social work and more than 15 years of professional experience across social services, social work, and mental health care. I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. I recognize that everyone comes to therapy with different experiences, challenges, and hopes for what might change. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, struggling with familiar patterns, or simply trying to make sense of what you're experiencing, my goal is to understand your circumstances, what matters to you, and what you hope to gain from our work together.
I help individuals navigate anxiety, stress, relationship challenges, and life transitions through thoughtful, collaborative therapy that encourages greater understanding, flexibility, and meaningful change.
My style is warm, collaborative, and thoughtful. I believe therapy is not simply about addressing symptoms, but also about developing a deeper understanding of yourself, recognizing patterns that may be holding you back, and discovering more effective ways to navigate life's challenges. I'll listen attentively, ask thoughtful questions, offer honest and constructive feedback, and work alongside you as you develop greater clarity, confidence, and the ability to make meaningful changes in your life.
First session
Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin understanding what brings you to therapy. I'll invite you to share what's been happening in your life, the challenges you're experiencing, and what you hope might be different. We'll explore your concerns, relevant experiences, and what you've already tried or found helpful. I'll ask thoughtful questions to better understand your circumstances, while giving you room to share at a pace that feels comfortable. You don't need to have everything figured out or know exactly where to begin. As we talk, we'll begin identifying what feels most important to address and consider what a helpful direction for our work might look like. There may be questions we haven't answered or areas we'll need more time to explore, and that's a natural part of the process. My hope is that you leave our first session feeling heard, respected, and with a better sense of what working together could look like.
Strengths
One of the strengths I bring to therapy is a thoughtful, curious, and collaborative approach to understanding each person's experiences. I take time to listen, ask meaningful questions, and explore not only the challenges you're facing, but also the patterns, circumstances, and underlying concerns that may be contributing to them. I believe that people often have more strengths, resources, and possibilities than they recognize, particularly when they're feeling overwhelmed or stuck. My role is to help you discover and build on those strengths while developing new perspectives and practical ways of responding to life's challenges. I also value the connection between understanding and action. Insight can be meaningful, but knowing what needs to change doesn't always make change easy. Together, we can identify obstacles, explore what may be keeping you stuck, and develop manageable steps toward what matters most to you. Whether you're navigating anxiety, relationship difficulties, career concerns, life transitions, or challenges with motivation and self-confidence, I aim to bring warmth, thoughtful reflection, honest feedback, and practical guidance to our work together. My approach is flexible and individualized, with an emphasis on helping you develop greater clarity, confidence, and the ability to move forward in ways that feel meaningful and sustainable.
Ideal clients
I work with adults from diverse backgrounds who may be navigating anxiety, stress, emotional difficulties, relationship challenges, or important life transitions. Some feel overwhelmed by competing responsibilities or expectations, while others find themselves repeating familiar patterns, struggling with uncertainty, or feeling stuck despite their efforts to move forward. You may be seeking relief from distressing symptoms, a better understanding of yourself, healthier ways of responding to challenges, or greater clarity about the direction of your life. You might know exactly what you'd like to work on, or you may still be trying to make sense of what you're experiencing. I welcome clients who are curious about understanding themselves, as well as those who are uncertain where to begin. You don't need to have everything figured out or feel ready to make major changes. What matters is having an opportunity to explore your experiences openly, develop greater understanding, and discover what might be helpful for you. Whether your goals involve emotional well-being, relationships, personal growth, or navigating difficult circumstances, we'll work together to identify an approach that respects your experiences, values, and individual needs.
Treatment methods
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
I incorporate mindfulness-based therapy to help clients develop greater awareness of their thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and habitual patterns of responding. Rather than immediately trying to change or eliminate uncomfortable experiences, we begin by learning to notice and understand them with greater curiosity and less judgment. This awareness can create opportunities to respond more intentionally instead of reacting automatically. Depending on your needs, I integrate elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other evidence-based approaches to help you examine unhelpful patterns, develop psychological flexibility, and relate differently to difficult thoughts and feelings. I also emphasize translating understanding into meaningful action. Together, we may explore what matters most to you, identify obstacles, and develop manageable steps toward change. My approach is practical, collaborative, and adapted to your circumstances, with the goal of helping you navigate challenges with greater clarity, flexibility, and confidence.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients better understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another and shape their experiences. Together, we explore patterns of thinking, underlying beliefs, and habitual responses that may contribute to anxiety, depression, stress, or feeling stuck. Rather than simply trying to replace negative thoughts with positive ones, we learn to examine our interpretations, question assumptions, consider alternative perspectives, and develop more balanced and realistic ways of understanding situations. This process also involves recognizing how avoidance and familiar behavioral patterns may unintentionally reinforce the difficulties we're trying to overcome. Beyond developing insight, I incorporate practical strategies to help you experiment with new ways of responding, approach challenges more effectively, and gradually build confidence through experience. This may include breaking overwhelming tasks into manageable steps, increasing engagement in meaningful activities, and developing skills that support lasting change.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I use ACT to help clients develop a different relationship with difficult thoughts and emotions, rather than feeling they must eliminate them before moving forward. We explore what matters most to you, recognize patterns of avoidance or struggle, and develop greater psychological flexibility. Part of this process involves learning to acknowledge what may be beyond our control while directing our attention and energy toward what we can influence—our choices, actions, and how we respond to life's challenges. Together, we work toward making choices and taking meaningful actions that reflect your values, even when uncertainty or discomfort is present.
