First session
Your first counseling session with Amy is focused on understanding your story, your struggles, and what you hope to gain from therapy. This session is an overall assessment that helps Amy learn about the difficulties you’re currently facing, the symptoms you’re experiencing, and the life circumstances that may be affecting your well-being. You will talk together about your family dynamics, how you grew up, and any past experiences—good or difficult—that may be influencing your life today. Amy will also ask about any previous counseling or treatment you’ve had, your medical history, and the ways you are currently coping with challenges both now and in the future. This bio-psychosocial assessment gives Amy a complete picture of your needs and experiences. The goal of this first session is not to overwhelm you, but to help you feel seen, understood, and supported. By gathering this information, Amy can work with you to identify what you want to focus on in therapy and help you begin shaping meaningful, realistic counseling goals. It’s a collaborative conversation designed to set the foundation for your healing and growth.
Strengths
What sets Amy apart as a therapist is the combination of her clinical expertise and her lived experience. While she is deeply grounded in her education, training, and years of professional practice, Amy also brings the insight that comes from her own personal journey of recovery from addiction and healing from childhood trauma. This dual perspective allows her to connect with clients on a level that is both genuine and compassionate, offering understanding that goes beyond textbooks and theories. Amy’s approach is warm, direct, and deeply human. She understands the courage it takes to face difficult emotions, break old patterns, and step into recovery, because she has walked that path herself. Her therapeutic methods draw from evidence-based practices, but her ability to meet clients with empathy, authenticity, and respect is what clients often describe as the most impactful part of their work with her. As a result, clients feel supported, seen, and safe enough to explore the roots of their struggles—whether addiction, trauma, or life transitions—and begin building healthier, more empowered ways of living. Amy’s goal is always to help clients not only understand their story, but also reshape it into one of resilience, strength, and meaningful change.
Ideal clients
Amy’s ideal client is someone who is ready to seek support, even if they aren’t sure where to begin. They may be struggling with addiction, feeling weighed down by life’s challenges, or recognizing patterns that no longer serve them. Many come to therapy carrying unresolved trauma or experiences that have shaped their choices, relationships, and sense of self. Amy works best with individuals who want guidance in understanding these deeper influences, developing healthier coping strategies, and creating meaningful change. Her ideal client is open to exploring their thoughts and emotions, willing to look honestly at the past, and motivated—at their own pace—to build a healthier, more balanced life. Whether they are working toward recovery, navigating difficult transitions, or seeking clarity in who they are and where they’re going, Amy supports clients who strive to heal, grow, and take ownership of their personal journey.
Treatment methods
Humanistic
I believe that it is very important to meet a client where they are and go from there. In the beginning of the therapeutic process, much of the time is spent gaining trust and getting to know one another. After I have established rapport with the client, then I will utilize other modalities depending on the client's needs.
