Sometimes life throws challenges our way that seem impossible to overcome. The truth is it is our emotions that overwhelm us, not the problem. Emotions such as anxiety and depression make it difficult to think and problem-solve. When emotions are overwhelming, we struggle to process them and they can get stuck internally leading to psychological, behavioral and physical distress disrupting our focus, work, relationships and self-care. Whether caused by trauma, internal conflicts, grief and loss, transitions in life or parenting challenges, intense emotions are a normal part of human experience. We all need and deserve a safe, supportive and therapeutic space to process these emotions. My goal is to create that space for you and guide you through those intense emotions, processing them to facilitate the unfolding of your body’s natural tendency towards healing. I have 26 years of experience, including doctoral and post-doctoral level training, in helping individuals of all ages and various cultural backgrounds confront their emotions, understand them and develop skills to manage them. Together we will explore and identify the thoughts, beliefs and behaviors that fuel your emotions and cause you to feel out of alignment with your true self. In addition to cognitive behavioral therapy, I use a holistic approach integrating the mind, body and spirit to support lasting change. With my knowledge of evidence based techniques, I will help you harness your inner strengths and direct your energy towards the positive outcomes you seek.
After your first session, you can expect to feel that you were heard and respected for where you are on your path to improving your mental health. Your ideas and feelings will be valued as we work together to determine the goals for your therapy. Each session will be an opportunity to receive support and education to help you develop new skills. You can expect insightful feedback that will provide clarity and direction as you move forward. You will find that you are using new strategies in between sessions and developing new perspectives that support your ability to make positive behavioral choices and feel a greater sense of inner peace.
I utilize insight-oriented and cognitive behavioral therapies while integrating an understanding of multicultural influences to help patients develop meta-awareness and healthy coping strategies. Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure Therapy as well as Acceptance Commitment Therapy are among the approaches I use. I use a non-directive play therapy with children integrating directive strategies if needed. I also provide breathing and relaxation training. Cognitive Behavioral Approaches are supported with worksheets and homework to promote change. I encourage clients to keep a therapy notebook to facilitate reviewing strategies and replacement thoughts daily.
One of my greatest strengths is being able to build a strong rapport with patients no matter their age or background. I believe that creating a strong therapeutic alliance with each client is crucial to fostering hope and confidence in one's self-worth allowing them to tap into an innate ability to grow and heal. Clients feel emotionally safe, heard and validated as they share their inner world with me. Only when clients openly share the details of their experience can the opportunity exist for an accurate conceptualizarían of the problems which provides the foundation for the development of a successful treatment plan. By integrating a holistic perspective, all possible contributing factors are considered allowing for the most direct and natural path to recovery to be explored first.
