Ellyn De Guida
Welcome-I'm a licensed clinical social worker and I've had the privilege of working with individuals and couples who have experienced depression, anxiety, frustrating communication patterns in everyday life as well as individuals who are navigating the impact of traumatic events on their lives and relationships. My approach is rooted in empathy and respect using techniues such as EMDR, Mindfulness Techniques, CBT and Psychoeducation Techniques.
First session
It's important for people to feel heard and understood and experience a sense of hope that they have found a partner who understands and is ready to explore their concerns.
Strengths
I've been told that my way of communicating creates a sense of calm for clients and even friends. I'm present and focused in all of my conversations, professional and personal. I believe that feedback from a therapist can be valuable but welcome feedback on my feedback.
Ideal clients
Young adults and adults who may be experiencing anxiety, stress, depression, self-esteem concerns, life transitions including the challenges of entering college, adjusting to a new career, relationship concerns, changes in physical health, substance use concerns, caregiving challenges. People often begin therapy because they are experiencing challenges that may feel overwhelming and unsolvable. They may also experience ambivalance about sharing their personal story and life experiences with a stranger. I undertand that trust take time to develop but as we work collaboratively to identify concerns and create goals, a strong, trusting relationship, which promotes compassion, empathy is created.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
it's helpful for us to realize that the way we think about ourselves, other people and life situations might be keeping us from considering other, more flexible or helpful, ways of thinking that might allow us to become more resilient and emotionally balanced.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
This approach helps us to bring our focus to the present moment, using breathing and other techniques while developing a non-judgmental way of looking at difficult emotions, stressful experiences. We often allow ourselves to exist in the past or try to predict or control the future both of which can cause depression, anger or anxiety. It's often more helpful to look at the past or the future while being firmly grounded in the present.
EMDR
EMDR is a treatment approach that allows the brain, where trauma is stored, to release powerful emotions associated with past events and experiences. The events are not erased but how we connect to them emotionally changes.
Psychodynamic
It's often helpful to understand how past thoughts, feelings and memories have contributed to the choices we have made in life. By understanding ourselves, we can change behavior, improve self-esteem and improve relationships.
