Cora Coleman

LMSW-C (she/her)25 years of experience

Hello, My name is Cora Coleman, I'm married, 5 adult children and 4 grandchildren. I am a native Detroiter (Go Lions). I attended WSU where I earned my Master degree in Social Work. I have over 25 years of experience in working with individuals, and I have had much success in serving and observing individuals as they reach their hopes and dreams, as well as their therapeutic goals. I am so pleased that you came to see me today, and I want you to know that you can relax because you're in the right place. I know the process works, if you are willing to do the work. Don't worry I won't leave you hanging we're better together.

First session

I like to use the first session as a meet and greet time for the client and I to get a feel for each other. For example, I will take the time to learn the client's preferences, i.e., what name he/she wants to be called. I also attempt to learn something of the client's background and what brought them to seek help. This information will assist me in learning some of the challenges the individual has and serve as a guide when it comes time to work on goals and objectives with the client.

Strengths

I feel my greatest strengths is my ability to engage with the client and really listen to what they want to see happen in their life.

Ideal clients

I feel that I am best positioned to serve parent's with young children, the senior population, and individual's with low self esteem, or depression issues. I also have experience working with families of individual's with intellectual disabilities such as autism.

Treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I have had over 20 years of experience working with individuals using. It works because the individual is encouraged to focus on living in the present rather than t past. I have individuals talk about their hopes and dreams, and I listen. The individual is encouraged to eventually come up with goals that will give them a chance to achieve their hopes and dreams.

Parent-Child Interaction (PCIT)

I have 10 years experience as a Infant Mental Health Family Specialist. I use my training to educate new parent's and provide them with new parenting skills so that they can bond with the new baby.

Attachment-based

Many things can happen to cause a parent to experience attachment issues such as, post partum blues, or ghost in the nursery syndrome where the parent is overwhelmed with trying to parent as her mom, aunt or grandmother did. Sometimes it could be that the parent didn't get the hoped for baby. I have tools in my tool box to help the parent over come their attachment issues which often means exploring the childhood of the parent.
