Kimberly Sibley
Welcome! Whether you're considering therapy for the first time or looking for someone new to work with, I'm glad you've found your way here. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Maryland and West Virginia, with 23 years of experience in therapy, case management, child welfare, education, and behavioral health. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with couples, parents, children, homemakers, retirees, and professionals from many different backgrounds, including first responders, healthcare workers, educators, attorneys, and military personnel.
You don't have to figure everything out on your own. Life can be complicated, and sometimes having someone to talk with makes all the difference.
I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, trauma, grief/loss, stress, parenting concerns, behavioral challenges, low self-esteem, addictions, relationship difficulties, and life transitions, including career changes and retirement. My experience also includes consultation, court testimony, adoption/foster care, crisis intervention, EAP, Abuse Intervention Programs, juvenile sex offender treatment programs, and supporting survivors of domestic/sexual abuse. I also work with students from elementary school through college, graduate school, and professional programs, supporting their academic, social, and emotional needs. My approach is genuine, nonjudgmental, and collaborative. I believe therapy should be a safe, supportive space where you feel seen, heard, understood, and accepted without judgment. Everyone's journey is different, and we'll focus on what matters most to you at a pace that feels right. I genuinely care about the clients I work with and value the relationships we build. I've had the privilege of working with clients over extended periods, supporting them through different seasons of life, challenges, and accomplishments. I never take for granted the trust someone places in me when sharing the most personal parts of their life. Come as you are, and we'll start there. If you're ready to begin, I would be honored to work alongside you. ***My couples and family therapy caseload is currently full. ***I am unable to provide crisis services through telehealth therapy.
First session
Your first session is primarily about helping me get to know you, not just your symptoms or diagnosis, but who you are, what's been happening in your life, and what brought you to therapy. I understand that meeting a new therapist and sharing personal information can feel uncomfortable, especially if you've never been in therapy before. There's no expectation that you share everything during our first meeting. We'll take our time and start wherever you feel comfortable. We'll talk about what led you to reach out, the concerns you're experiencing, important parts of your history, your relationships and support system, and any previous experiences you've had with therapy. You'll also have the opportunity to ask me questions. Therapy is a relationship, and I believe it's important that you feel comfortable with the person you choose as your therapist. By the end of our first session, I hope you feel that I've begun to understand you, what you're experiencing, and what you'd like to work toward. Together, we'll begin identifying your goals and discussing how I can best support you. You don't need to prepare anything special beforehand. Come as you are, and we'll take it from there.
Strengths
One of the greatest strengths I bring to therapy is the experience I've gained throughout my career. I've learned that being a good therapist involves much more than knowing therapeutic techniques. It's also about knowing when to listen, when to ask meaningful questions, when to offer a different perspective, when to provide guidance, and when someone simply needs space to process what they're feeling. I'm an engaged therapist who offers honest feedback, encouragement, and practical guidance when it may be helpful. I believe therapy should be collaborative, and I want you to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing your thoughts, and letting me know what is or isn't working for you. Therapy can involve difficult conversations, but I don't believe every session has to feel heavy or clinical. You can talk with me about all parts of your life, from your most difficult experiences to your accomplishments, exciting moments, and everyday challenges. I also look beyond a diagnosis. While a diagnosis can help us understand symptoms, it doesn't define who you are. Most importantly, I want our sessions to feel worthwhile. Whether you leave with a better understanding of yourself, a new perspective, tools, a sense of relief, or simply feeling a little less alone, I want our time together to be meaningful and helpful to you. I've watched people find strength they didn't realize they had, work through painful experiences, rebuild relationships, and make meaningful changes in their lives. Being able to walk alongside someone through those moments is what makes this work so meaningful to me. My approach is flexible and draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Family Systems, Motivational Interviewing, Strengths-Based Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Supportive Therapy, Trauma-Informed Therapy, and Mindfulness.
Ideal clients
You don't have to come to therapy knowing exactly what's wrong, what you need, or even where to begin. Sometimes you just know that something in your life doesn't feel the way you'd like it to anymore. You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, depressed, exhausted, disconnected, or stuck. Maybe you're struggling with ADHD, relationships, grief, self-esteem, or a major life change. Perhaps you've been holding everything together for everyone else while quietly struggling yourself. Or maybe things are going relatively well, but there are parts of your life you'd like to better understand or improve. I enjoy working with people from different backgrounds, ages, and life experiences. Some clients reach out during particularly difficult times, while others have been carrying something for years and are finally ready to talk about it. You don't have to have everything figured out, and you certainly don't have to know all the answers before getting started. Whether you're new to therapy or have been in therapy before, we'll work together to better understand what you're experiencing, recognize your strengths, explore different perspectives, and develop ways to manage challenges that make sense for your life. My hope is that therapy becomes a place where you can be yourself, talk openly, feel comfortable asking questions, and work toward the changes that matter most to you.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. Together, we'll explore patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, depression, overthinking, or relationship difficulties. We'll work on finding healthier perspectives and practical ways to manage challenges and move forward.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
DBT offers practical tools to manage strong emotions, handle stressful situations, set boundaries, and communicate more effectively. Together, we'll work on understanding your triggers, responding rather than reacting, and finding healthier ways to cope while respecting how you feel.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
EFT helps us understand the deeper emotions and needs behind our reactions and relationships. Together, we'll explore patterns that may be creating distance, conflict, or misunderstandings. Whether individually or as a couple, we'll work toward greater emotional understanding, connection, and healthier relationships.
Supportive
Sometimes you just need someone who genuinely listens, understands, and offers a different perspective. I'll provide a comfortable, supportive space where you can talk openly, feel heard, and work through challenges. Along the way, I'll offer encouragement, honest feedback and guidance.
Motivational Interviewing
Making changes isn't always easy, especially when you're unsure where to begin. Together, we'll explore what matters most to you, recognize the strengths you already have, and work through anything holding you back. My goal is to support you in building confidence and making changes that feel right for your life.
