Hello, and welcome. I'm Natalia Black, a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) dedicated to helping adolescents and adults achieve better mental health and overall well-being. I provide compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, sleep difficulties, stress, and other mental health concerns. My approach is collaborative, supportive, and patient-centered. I believe that every person deserves to feel heard and understood, and I work closely with my clients to develop personalized treatment plans that may include medication management, education, and practical strategies to support lasting positive change. My goal is to create a safe, welcoming environment where clients feel empowered to take an active role in their mental health journey and achieve their personal goals.

First session

During our first session, my primary goal is to get to know you and gain a comprehensive understanding of your concerns, symptoms, strengths, and treatment goals. We will discuss what brought you to care, your current challenges, your medical and mental health history, any previous treatment experiences, and how your symptoms are affecting your daily life, relationships, work, or school. This initial appointment is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and share what you hope to achieve through treatment. I take a collaborative, nonjudgmental approach and strive to create a comfortable space where you feel heard, respected, and supported. By the end of the session, we will review my clinical impressions, discuss potential treatment options, and develop an individualized plan tailored to your needs. This may include medication recommendations, lifestyle and behavioral strategies, therapy referrals when appropriate, and clear next steps for your care. My goal is for you to leave the appointment with a better understanding of your symptoms, a sense of direction, and confidence that we are working together toward meaningful improvement in your mental health and overall well-being.

Strengths

One of my greatest strengths is my ability to build genuine, trusting relationships with clients. I strive to create a warm, supportive, and judgment-free environment where individuals feel comfortable discussing their concerns openly. I believe that meaningful progress begins with feeling heard, respected, and understood. As a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I combine evidence-based psychiatric care with a holistic understanding of how mental, emotional, physical, and lifestyle factors influence overall well-being. My approach is collaborative and individualized—I recognize that each person's experiences, challenges, and goals are unique, and I tailor treatment plans accordingly. I have experience working with adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, sleep disturbances, stress-related concerns, and other mental health conditions. I am particularly passionate about helping clients understand the connection between sleep, mental health, and daily functioning, empowering them with practical tools and strategies that support long-term wellness. Clients often appreciate my approachable communication style, attention to detail, and commitment to shared decision-making. Whether discussing medication options, coping skills, or lifestyle changes, I work alongside my clients to help them make informed decisions and achieve meaningful, sustainable improvements in their mental health and quality of life.

Ideal clients

My ideal clients are adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, sleep disturbances, stress-related disorders, and life-transition challenges. I am particularly well-positioned to serve individuals who are motivated to improve their mental health but may feel overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain about where to begin. Many of my clients are high-achieving professionals, students, caregivers, veterans, and individuals managing multiple responsibilities while struggling with emotional or behavioral health concerns. I work best with clients who value a collaborative and supportive therapeutic relationship and are open to exploring both medication management and evidence-based behavioral strategies. Some clients come to treatment seeking relief from symptoms such as excessive worry, low mood, poor concentration, irritability, insomnia, or burnout, while others are looking to improve their overall functioning, resilience, and quality of life. My approach is particularly beneficial for individuals who want to better understand the connection between mental health, sleep, stress, and daily functioning. I enjoy helping clients identify barriers to wellness, develop practical coping skills, and create realistic goals that align with their personal values. Through a combination of psychiatric evaluation, medication management when appropriate, psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, and supportive counseling, I help clients build confidence and make meaningful, sustainable changes. Above all, I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered to actively participate in their treatment. My goal is to partner with clients as they work toward improved emotional well-being, healthier relationships, better sleep, enhanced functioning, and a greater sense of balance in their lives.

Treatment methods

Motivational Interviewing

In my practice as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I use motivational interviewing (MI) as a patient-centered, evidence-based communication approach to help patients explore and resolve ambivalence about behavior change. MI is particularly useful when working with individuals who may be hesitant to engage in treatment, adhere to medications, address substance use, improve sleep habits, or adopt healthier coping strategies. I apply the core principles of MI by expressing empathy, supporting patient autonomy, developing discrepancy, and rolling with resistance rather than confronting it. During patient encounters, I use open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summaries (OARS) to encourage patients to discuss their concerns and motivations. For example, instead of telling a patient they need to take their medication consistently, I might ask, “What concerns do you have about taking this medication?” or “How do you think your symptoms might improve if treatment were more consistent?” These questions allow patients to identify their own reasons for change rather than feeling pressured by the provider. Reflective listening is a key component of my practice. I frequently restate or reframe patients’ statements to demonstrate understanding and help them gain insight into their thoughts and behaviors. For instance, if a patient says, “I know I should exercise more, but I’m always exhausted,” I might respond, “It sounds like improving your health is important to you, but your fatigue makes it difficult to get started.” This approach validates the patient’s experience while encouraging further exploration of potential solutions. I also use MI to elicit change talk by helping patients identify discrepancies between their current behaviors and their personal goals. For example, when working with a patient experiencing depression who wants to improve relationships with family members, I may explore how untreated symptoms are affecting those relationships and discuss how treatment could help them achieve their desired outcomes. By focusing on the patient's own values and goals, motivation for change often becomes stronger and more sustainable. Overall, motivational interviewing enhances therapeutic rapport, increases patient engagement, and promotes shared decision-making. It aligns well with psychiatric practice because it respects patient autonomy while empowering individuals to take an active role in their treatment and recovery.
