I am a dedicated mental health professional with over a decade of experience in clinical social work and behavioral services. Currently completing his Psy.D. at California Southern University, Gabriel combines academic rigor with a deep-rooted passion for helping others—an ethic shaped by his upbringing in Ventura County and inspired by his Hispanic heritage. Gabriel began his journey in human services in 2006, earning his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from California Lutheran University. His commitment to making a meaningful impact led him to pursue a Master’s in Social Work from California State University, Long Beach, graduating in 2013. During this time, he co-founded Novo Behavioral Services, an agency born from a graduate school project and a shared vision to transform lives through Applied Behavior Analysis. What began as a passion project between two professionals with a combined 20+ years of experience has grown into a trusted behavioral health provider now serving multiple regions across California. In addition to his private practice work, Gabriel has served with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation since 2014. His work has included conducting psychological assessments, facilitating rehabilitation groups, and providing one-on-one therapeutic support to a diverse inmate population. His clinical approach is grounded in empathy, structure, and evidence-based practices, always tailored to meet individuals where they are. With over 13 years of experience in social work and behavioral health, Gabriel remains committed to elevating the quality and accessibility of mental health services across the state. He believes in building strong therapeutic relationships and creating systems of support that empower individuals and families to thrive.

First session

During the first session, clients can expect to gain a better understanding of what therapy will look like and what they can expect throughout the therapeutic process. I will take time to listen, learn about their concerns, and begin understanding their goals for therapy. Most importantly, I want clients to experience me as a relaxed, welcoming, and inviting therapist who provides a safe and nonjudgmental space. My goal is for clients to feel comfortable, heard, and respected from the very beginning. I hope they leave their first session with a clearer understanding of therapy and a sense that they have found someone they can feel comfortable working with.

Strengths

One of the greatest strengths I bring to my sessions is my ability to remain professional, ethical, and respectful while creating a safe and supportive environment for my clients. I understand the importance of maintaining professional boundaries, protecting confidentiality, and practicing within ethical guidelines. I strive to approach each client with compassion, patience, and without judgment. I also believe that active listening and being present are important strengths I bring to my work. I take the time to understand each client’s individual experiences, concerns, and goals rather than making assumptions about their needs. My background in social work has helped me develop strong communication, advocacy, and problem-solving skills that I incorporate into my sessions. Ultimately, I want my clients to feel heard, respected, and supported. I bring professionalism and ethical integrity to every session while also allowing clients to feel comfortable being themselves and working at a pace that feels appropriate for them

Ideal clients

My ideal client is someone who is open to exploring their thoughts, feelings, and experiences and is willing to work toward positive change. I enjoy working with individuals who may be experiencing life transitions, stress, relationship challenges, or difficulties managing emotions. I believe every client is unique, so I meet people where they are and work collaboratively to identify their strengths, needs, and goals. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel comfortable being themselves. I value clients who are willing to participate in the therapeutic process and take steps toward improving their overall well-being.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. In sessions, I work collaboratively with clients to identify negative or unhelpful thought patterns that may be contributing to emotional distress or challenges in their daily lives. We then explore these thoughts, examine whether they are based on facts or assumptions, and develop healthier and more balanced ways of thinking. I also incorporate practical strategies that clients can use outside of therapy, such as identifying triggers, practicing coping skills, setting achievable goals, and developing healthier behaviors. I believe CBT is most effective when clients are actively involved in the process and learn skills they can apply independently. My goal is to help clients develop greater self-awareness, build confidence in managing challenges, and create lasting changes that support their mental health, wellness, and personal growth.
