First session
Clients should expect to be treated with respect within a nonjudgmental atmosphere. After the initial introduction, clients are guided through the process of revealing the pages of their story at a pace which is comfortable for them. The initial meeting establishes fluidity, safety, a rapport, and helps me to understand the individual expectations, concerns, and learning styles.
Strengths
One of my greatest attributes is my ability to establish a rapport by effectively listening to the silence. Great value is often found in the unspoken, but it takes patience and observation to recognize the hidden gems. Obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies with concentrated coursework in Human Communications Disorders enable me to hone my natural desire to hear other people’s stories. From childhood, I was an avid reader who found people and their characters/masks interesting. I began working with preschoolers with special needs, many of whom had Autism Spectrum Disorder were nonverbal. Observing body language revealed many narratives. The ability to observe has enhanced my communication skills and increased my desire to discover new stories as well as guide new stories as they unfold.
Ideal clients
Having worked in the public school system, as a realtor, in the prison, with adolescents in a psychiatric rehabilitation treatment facility, mature adults in their homes, and within outpatient clinics for individuals with opioid usage disorder, I am comfortable working with clients from ages 9-99 hailing from diverse backgrounds. I like the challenge of assisting clients in navigating their mental wellness by examining the multiple dimensions of wellness and all available protective resources. Together we can effectively explore possibilities.
Treatment methods
Eclectic
Each client presents with a unique set of circumstances. Utilizing active listening skills, I assess the client to determine the initial modality of treatment. As we progress, the modality may change to meet those needs. I have worked with diverse populations for medication management and therapy using the creative arts, CBT, DBT person-centered focus, and even participated in some animal-assisted therapy sessions.
