Emily Heuerman
Welcome! I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) who is passionate about helping people navigate life's challenges with compassion, curiosity, and practical support. I provide a warm, collaborative environment where you can feel safe exploring difficult emotions, building healthier coping strategies, and working toward meaningful, lasting change. Whether you're experiencing anxiety, trauma, relationship concerns, ADHD, life transitions, or simply feeling stuck, I'm here to help you move forward at a pace that feels right for you.
First session
Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin building a foundation for our work together. We'll talk about what brings you to therapy, the challenges you're currently facing, and what you hope to gain from the process. I'll also ask questions about your personal history, relationships, strengths, and any previous experiences with therapy so I can better understand your unique story. There is no pressure to share everything during our first meeting. We will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you, and you are always in control of what you choose to discuss. My goal is to create a welcoming, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, supported, and understood. By the end of the session, we'll identify some initial goals and discuss how we can work together moving forward. I want you to leave with a clearer understanding of the therapy process and confidence that you have a partner in your journey toward growth and healing.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths is creating a space where clients feel comfortable, accepted, and genuinely heard. I strive to build a trusting therapeutic relationship rooted in empathy, authenticity, and collaboration. I recognize that every person brings a unique story, so I tailor treatment to meet each client's individual needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. I also bring a balance of compassion and practical skill-building to our sessions. While I will always meet you where you are, I also believe that growth often requires stepping outside of your comfort zone. When appropriate, I will gently challenge unhelpful patterns, beliefs, or behaviors to encourage insight, build resilience, and support meaningful change. Together, we'll explore what may be keeping you stuck while developing practical tools you can use in everyday life. My goal is to help you gain confidence, deepen self-understanding, and create lasting change in a way that feels both supportive and empowering.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is ready to better understand themselves, explore their experiences, and make meaningful changes in their life. They may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected from themselves, or struggling with patterns that no longer serve them. They are willing to be curious about their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships while developing new ways to cope and move forward. I enjoy working with clients who are motivated for growth and open to the therapeutic process. Whether they are seeking support with anxiety, trauma, emotional regulation, self-esteem, ADHD, relationships, or navigating a major life transition, my goal is to help them build insight, confidence, and practical skills. My ideal client understands that therapy is a collaborative journey. They are willing to show up honestly, explore difficult topics when needed, and recognize that growth often comes from both compassion and challenge. Together, we can create a space where they feel supported while working toward becoming the person they want to be.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into my practice to help clients develop a healthier relationship with their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Rather than focusing solely on eliminating difficult feelings, ACT helps clients learn how to make space for uncomfortable emotions while choosing actions that align with their values and the life they want to create. Through ACT, we explore patterns that may be keeping you stuck, identify what truly matters to you, and build skills to increase psychological flexibility. This may include practicing mindfulness, developing self-compassion, challenging avoidance patterns, and learning how to respond to thoughts and emotions with greater awareness rather than feeling controlled by them. My goal is to help clients recognize that difficult experiences are a natural part of being human while building the confidence to move forward in meaningful ways. ACT provides a framework for accepting what cannot be changed, taking purposeful action toward what matters, and creating a life guided by personal values rather than fear, avoidance, or past experiences.
Integrative
I take an integrative approach to therapy by drawing from multiple evidence-based therapeutic approaches to best support each client's unique needs, goals, and experiences. I believe that no single approach works for everyone, and therapy is most effective when it is personalized to the individual rather than following a one-size-fits-all model. Together, we may incorporate strategies from approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Adlerian Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and other modalities depending on what best fits your goals. This allows us to explore your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, past experiences, and personal strengths from multiple perspectives. My goal is to provide a flexible, collaborative, and supportive therapeutic experience where you feel understood while also gaining practical tools to create meaningful change. I strive to meet clients where they are while helping them build self-awareness, resilience, and the skills needed to move toward the life they want.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
I use Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help clients develop greater self-awareness and understanding of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I guide clients in identifying different “parts” of themselves, such as protective parts, critical parts, or vulnerable parts, and exploring the roles these parts serve. Through a supportive and nonjudgmental process, I help clients understand the underlying needs and experiences connected to these parts while developing greater self-compassion and emotional awareness. I also help clients identify when protective parts may be influencing current relationships, decision-making, or emotional responses and support them in responding from a more grounded and intentional place.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) to help the client identify and change thoughts, behaviors, and habits that contribute to sleep difficulties. I work collaboratively with clients to assess sleep patterns, identify unhelpful beliefs about sleep, and develop healthier sleep routines. Interventions may include sleep scheduling, stimulus control, sleep hygiene education, cognitive restructuring, and relaxation strategies. I also help clients recognize how stress, anxiety, and emotional factors can contribute to disrupted sleep and support them in developing practical skills to improve both sleep quality and overall daily functioning.
