After graduating from the University of Maryland School of Social Work in Baltimore, I relocated to South Florida. After several years practicing law, I realized I wanted to spend the rest of my career helping others from a behavioral health perspective. After two years treating clients in a chemical dependency hospital, followed by a long-term substance use facility, I served as a behavioral health counselor for several years at a local high school.
In our first session, I will listen to you and aim to understand exactly what is troubling you. I will tell you about myself and we will get to know each other informally. If you are comfortable with me as your therapist, we can proceed with setting a goals for our time together.
I have extensive experience working with adolescents as a full-time school counselor. As a therapist in the substance use field, I worked with clients presenting co-occurring disorders. I have treated clients diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and generalized anxiety among others, as they simultaneously worked toward maintaining sobriety.
I enjoy working with those who feel "stuck" or unfulfilled with their life and what they have imagined for themselves. Clients that are severely depressed and/or anxious, as well as adolescents are a large part of my practice.
Thoughts influence our emotions which in turn, affect behavior. I help clients change unhelpful patterns of thinking and tap into the power to do so. CBT is the mainstay of my practice and I have used this method my entire career.
n my practice, I have integrated Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as a therapeutic method to help clients process past traumatic experiences and deeply rooted negative beliefs. EMDR facilitates the reprocessing of memories by using bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements, which helps the brain reframe and integrate distressing memories. I use this method when clients are stuck in repetitive patterns of emotional or psychological distress. By guiding clients through targeted reprocessing of traumatic memories, EMDR helps reduce the intensity of their emotional responses and allows them to view their past experiences from a healthier perspective. My approach involves a thorough assessment to ensure the client is ready for EMDR, creating a safe and supportive environment, and using the method to unlock healing at a pace that aligns with the client's emotional readiness and comfort. EMDR has proven to be a powerful tool in enhancing resilience and fostering lasting emotional growth in my clients.
