Shawn Malugin
Thank you for taking the time to review my profile. I am known professionally as Dr. Shawn, and I approach psychiatry from a comprehensive, whole-person perspective. I became a provider because of my passion for understanding the human brain and helping people better understand themselves. I consider myself a lifelong student of the brain, continually learning how brain health influences our thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, physical health, and overall quality of life. I believe patients deserve more than a diagnosis. They deserve to understand how their brain, body, environment, and life experiences interact to shape their mental health. My approach integrates evidence-based psychiatric treatment with individualized care that considers nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, relationships, physical health, and other factors that influence brain health and well-being. A whole-person approach recognizes that biological, behavioral, social, and environmental factors are interconnected.
By integrating functional psychiatry, I work to address the root causes of mental health challenges and create personalized strategies for long-term wellness.
My clinical approach is collaborative, compassionate, individualized, and evidence-based. I strive to understand the person behind the symptoms and consider biological, psychological, social, developmental, and environmental factors when developing treatment plans. My goal is to empower patients to become active participants in their mental health and develop sustainable strategies for long-term wellness. I believe mental health care should go beyond asking, “What is the diagnosis?” We should also ask, “What has happened, how is the brain and body responding, and what can we do to help this person heal and function at their best?” Ultimately, my goal is to help patients not only feel better, but understand themselves better. When we improve brain health, we have the opportunity to improve the quality of the entire life.
First session
At the beginning of a psychiatric evaluation, my foremost goal is to understand the person behind the symptoms. I take time to explore each patient’s life experiences, including significant challenges, trauma, relationships, medical history, and other events that may have influenced their current mental health. I also want to understand where they hope to go—exploring their goals, values, strengths, and vision for improved mental and emotional well-being. I incorporate principles of functional and whole-person psychiatry by considering the interconnected relationship between brain health, physical health, emotional well-being, and environment. This biopsychosocial perspective helps me develop a more complete understanding of factors that may contribute to a patient’s symptoms and functioning. I also carefully evaluate whether medication may be beneficial as part of an individualized treatment plan. When patients are already taking psychotropic medications, I review their current regimen, effectiveness, adherence, side effects, interactions, and overall goals to determine whether treatment should be continued, adjusted, or reconsidered. Medication decisions are made collaboratively and based on the patient’s clinical needs, preferences, medical history, and response to treatment. Ultimately, my goal is to look beyond symptom reduction and develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the biological, psychological, social, and lifestyle factors influencing mental health. I want patients to feel heard, informed, and empowered to actively participate in their care.
Strengths
My primary goal in mental health treatment is to develop a comprehensive, individualized plan that addresses the whole person—not simply a diagnosis or a collection of symptoms. I believe effective psychiatric care recognizes the intricate connection between the brain, body, environment, and life experiences. My approach integrates evidence-based psychiatric treatment with psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral strategies, supportive counseling, medication management, and principles of functional psychiatry. I also consider the important role of brain health and lifestyle factors, including sleep, nutrition, physical activity, stress, relationships, and overall physical health. These factors can significantly influence mood, cognition, emotional regulation, and quality of life. I consider myself a lifelong student of the brain. I am passionate about understanding how the brain influences how we think, feel, behave, connect with others, and experience life. My goal is to help individuals understand these connections so they can become active participants in their mental health and overall wellness. I believe patients deserve more than a diagnosis. They deserve to understand what may be contributing to their symptoms and to have a treatment plan that reflects their individual needs, values, strengths, and goals. Every person's journey is unique, and treatment should be collaborative, respectful, and personalized. My goal is not simply symptom reduction, but helping individuals build sustainable strategies that promote resilience, improve functioning, support brain health, and enhance quality of life. Most importantly, you do not have to navigate your mental health journey alone. I am here to provide compassionate care, clinical expertise, education, and support while empowering you to take an active role in your healing and growth. Remember, you are not alone in this journey. I am here to provide the support, a treatment plan, and the care you need. My commitment is to you!
Ideal clients
I prioritize creating a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment where patients feel comfortable sharing their unique experiences and challenges. I believe effective mental health care begins with understanding the whole person—not simply a diagnosis or a list of symptoms. My approach incorporates principles of functional and lifestyle psychiatry, recognizing the connection between brain health, physical health, emotional well-being, and life experiences. I consider factors such as sleep, nutrition, physical activity, stress, relationships, medical conditions, and environment because these can influence mental health and overall well-being. With experience treating mood, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders, I take a comprehensive approach that looks beyond symptoms to better understand the biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors that may contribute to mental health concerns. Treatment plans are individualized and may integrate evidence-based psychiatric care, medication management, psychotherapy, behavioral strategies, and lifestyle interventions. When complementary or natural approaches are considered, I focus on options that are safe, evidence-informed, and appropriate for the individual. My goal is to partner with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses immediate concerns while supporting long-term resilience, brain health, functioning, and quality of life. Ultimately, I want patients to not only feel better, but to better understand themselves and become active participants in their mental health and overall wellness.
Treatment methods
Psychoeducation
Psychoeducation in functional psychiatry is an essential part of empowering individuals to better understand the connection between their mental, physical, and brain health. It helps patients recognize how factors such as biology, nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, environment, and life experiences can influence emotional and psychological well-being. By increasing knowledge and self-awareness, psychoeducation allows individuals to become active participants in their treatment and make informed, sustainable choices that support long-term mental and overall health.
