As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist nearing 20 years’ experience, I work with a foundation of Solution Focus and Systemic Therapy. I’m often looking for "the funny" in the moment and the world around me. I greatly enjoy sarcasm, snark, and satire. I'm fairly casual but have been told I "Clean up well", and clients have told me in the past they appreciate that I do not come across as "stuffy". I'm often daydreaming of going on cruises with my wife and occasionally think about bringing our children as well. I treasure a long nap in a hammock, and I love movie. Once upon a time I even submitted a short film to the Cannes Film Festival (wasn't selected) but I did enter. Prior to being a therapist, I found myself listening and caring, as people would end up just talking to me and telling me their life story. I decided I should put that to good use. Additionally, growing up my family was fortunate to be able to adopt and quickly we became a larger family that could not remember when my sister was not part of the family. Through the process, I realized how important family and relationships. I appreciate and look forward to the chance to help others get through the rough patches, when life hits hard. When the answer is not easily found, we take time to look at all the options and find something, at least one step towards better. We're not looking for perfection, just looking for progress, a little bit here and there.

Sometimes people experience emotional problems (e.g., anxiety, depression), behavioral problems (e.g., overeating, smoking), or relationship problems (e.g., excessive arguing, poor communication) that interfere with their daily functioning. These difficulties result from the interaction of biological, learning, behavioral, and environmental factors, which influence patterns of thinking and behaving. Negative life events can contribute to the development of self-defeating patterns of thinking and behaving, which some people can have difficulty changing. In my work, which I have been practicing for 40 years, I help people identify these self-defeating patterns and develop strategies for dealing with them. I emphasize the importance of practicing these strategies consistently, with the goal of handling emotions more effectively and behaving in more responsible and healthy ways. I focus on life pattern changes with respect to relationships, depression, anxiety, anger control, impulse control, and stress management.

I completed my graduate degree at Simmons School of Social Work in Boston Massachusetts, getting an MSW, and an Urban Leadership certificate. I have been licensed and doing psychotherapy since 2013. My last job before doing psychotherapy full time was working in an emergency room alongside psychiatric residents doing crisis evaluations, advocating for all populations to get them the proper level of care needed. I like to think in psychotherapy session’s that, “I meet people where they are at in life”, and take it from there. I am an empath and proud of it. I genuinely like helping people understand, identify and better manage their daily lives and relationships. I enjoy helping people to take control and get the best out of life for themselves.

Hello, my name is Vanessa, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, licensed in Florida, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Carolina. I am bilingual in English and Spanish, and I provide counseling in both languages to best support my clients’ needs. My professional background in mental health began during my undergraduate and graduate studies, where I gained experience working with children through the Department of Children & Families, with older adults in skilled nursing facilities, and with adolescents in group homes. Over the years, I have expanded my work to include diverse populations and settings. I served as a Nurse Navigator at one of the largest cancer hospitals in South Florida, providing counseling and advocacy for oncology patients and their families. I have also worked with adults in inpatient rehabilitation for substance use treatment, facilitated care for court-ordered clients, and supported outpatient clients within the LGBTQ+ community. I draw from multiple evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and individualized treatment planning. My focus is to meet clients where they are, help them return to a baseline where they feel comfortable and capable, and empower them to navigate life’s challenges. I consider myself open-minded, compassionate, and deeply empathetic. My mantra is simple: I am here for you. My role is to walk alongside you, provide tools and support, and help you manage both daily stressors and long-standing challenges. Life can feel like a roller coaster—full of unexpected changes, emotions, and pressures—but with the right support, it’s possible to find balance, peace, and overall well-being.

I have worked in a variety of mental health settings, which has given me a wide range of clinical experience and allowed me to work with clients from different walks of life and cultural backgrounds. I am radical and revolutionary in thought and praxis and believe in a liberated and equitable world for all people. Clients who tend to be attracted to me are those who may struggle with a lack of confidence and self-esteem, those who are plagued with "Imposter Syndrome", and those who identify as people-pleasers. I also work with People of Color on healing internalized oppression. My clients are often very bright and self-aware but feel they are missing the tools, accountability and higher-level knowledge to get themselves into action and start making tangible, concrete progress. Additional areas of focus: Addictions, LGBT, Relationship issues, Family conflicts, Trauma and abuse, Grief, Intimacy-related issues, Depression, Coping with life changes, Life Purpose, Multicultural Concerns, Prejudice and Discrimination, Self-Love, Women's Issues Therapy does not have to be a years-long, overwhelming or deeply painful process. Many people I have worked with have remarked that they were surprised at how quickly they were able to feel a sense of progress, where they felt stagnant for years or decades prior. While I am very good at what I do, I can only meet you as far and as deep as you are willing to go yourself. Those who are proactive about their healing work and take responsibility tend to make the most progress in the least amount of time.

That experience is more common than you think, and it frequently ties back to childhood experiences. It pains me to think of someone having to go through this alone, and it’s a big reason why I became a therapist. Stress, anger, depression, and anxiety can really impact your overall functioning and quality of life. Are you facing issues that you need help to work through? Do you have a life goal that you would like to achieve? Is it difficult to adjust to lifestyle changes? I recognize that our problems seldom exist in a bubble and that more often than not they are a direct reflection of our upbringing, past trauma, and/or our environment. Clients often cherish my ability to balance warmth and unconditional positive regard with challenging maladaptive beliefs. Investing in counseling can yield long-term rewards to influence healing, intimacy, and wholeness. Acquiring necessary tools for healthy growth can be invaluable to achieving an authenticity of self. We will endeavor to enhance your life through increased self-awareness, personal growth, and self-acceptance utilizing the modality most beneficial to you. Deciding to go to therapy may be a difficult decision. However, therapy can help you process complex emotions and strengthen your relationship with yourself and others. Therapy can also help you learn new ways of coping, especially during a pandemic. I welcome the opportunity to meet you and I'm honored by your consideration to allow me to journey with you.
