Welcome, my name is Lupita. I am an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) based in Virginia. I enjoy mixing modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), person-centered therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Polyvagal Theory and more depending on the unique needs and personalities of my clients. I am particularly interested in working with folks with trauma. I am trained in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, Adoption competency, and Trauma-focused CBT. I am an LGBTQ+ affirming counselor and ally. I am bilingual (English/Spanish) and enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds. I believe in working together with my clients in developing attainable goals and supporting them through the use of evidence-based practices to assist them achieve them. I approach my work with compassion, care, and consideration. I am dedicated to using my natural abilities to help connect with people in a grounded and honest fashion. I have a combination of nineteen years of experience in the mental health field. I feel strongly about keeping up with research and training, especially about: working with clients of various backgrounds genuinely and empathically. I honor a focus on multicultural needs and the importance of advocacy through volunteering in the community. I enjoy incorporating my love of art, music and dance as much as circumstances allow. A recent addition in my focus in this work has been developing my understanding of decolonizing and re-indigenizing therapy. I am a fluent Spanish speaker and appreciate being able to serve a more diverse group of clients whenever the chance presents itself. Sometimes, I serve birthing persons as a labor and delivery doula as well. I love to garden, watch movies, and read books as much as possible.
I try to arrange for a 90 minute assessment, whenever feasible, where I collect historical information about family upbringing, developmental and social history, spiritual beliefs, academic/employment info, current symptoms and more. We will identify current issues that the client is struggling with as well as develop attainable treatment goals. The first session is a great opportunity to get to know one another and begin to build a therapeutic alliance.
My biggest strengths are developing a strong therapeutic alliance based on respect, active listening, and a compassionate perspective.
I enjoy working with folks with varying issues of various ages. I most gravitate towards working with trauma. I am an LGBTQ+ affirming counselor. I have completed training in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) via Post Partum Support International and have led Post Partum groups as well as 1:1 counseling for persons adjusting to pregnancy or being a new parent. I have also led anger management groups in a previous practice. My training for adoption competency (TAC) has helped me more consciously assist folks that have been a part of the foster system or have issues revolving adoption topics. I have also had training in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). I utilize psychoeducation and mindfulness frequently as well as other evidence based techniques.
