Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

During our first session, we'll begin with introductions and spend time discussing your concerns, symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, and treatment goals. This comprehensive evaluation helps me develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. I treat a broad range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, and many other psychiatric conditions. Based on your evaluation, your treatment plan may include medication management, psychotherapy, lifestyle recommendations, or a combination of these evidence-based approaches. If medication is appropriate, we will discuss the benefits, potential risks, and treatment options together before making any decisions. Regular follow-up appointments are an important part of treatment, allowing us to monitor your progress, address any concerns or side effects, and make adjustments when needed. My goal is for every patient to leave our sessions feeling heard, supported, and hopeful. Successful treatment is built on a collaborative partnership. I encourage patients to actively participate in their care by taking medications as prescribed when indicated, engaging in therapy, attending scheduled follow-up appointments, and communicating openly about their progress and any concerns. Together, we will work toward improving your mental health and helping you achieve lasting wellness.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Over the past several years, I have had the privilege of working with children, adolescents, adults, and professionals from diverse backgrounds who are navigating a wide range of mental health challenges. This experience has enabled me to develop an evidence-based, patient-centered approach focused on identifying the underlying factors contributing to emotional and behavioral concerns and creating individualized treatment plans that promote meaningful, lasting improvement. My goal is not only to help relieve symptoms but also to equip patients with the knowledge, coping strategies, and ongoing support they need to achieve long-term mental wellness and an improved quality of life.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and modifying dysfunctional thoughts, behaviors, and emotional responses. It is based on the idea that our thoughts (cognitions), feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, and that changing negative thoughts and behaviors can lead to improvements in emotional regulation and overall mental health. I’ve been using CBT in my practice for the last two years. It has helped dozens of clients challenge reoccurring thoughts and manage their anxiety. We’ll use CBT to recognize how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other. We’ll then use that knowledge to change your thinking patterns, which will help you lead a less anxious and stressed life.

Interpersonal

Interpersonal therapy (IPT) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on improving interpersonal relationships and addressing interpersonal issues as the primary means of treating mental health issues. Once the interpersonal issues have been identified, the client and I would work together to implement specific interventions aimed at achieving the established goals.

My intake appointment was good. He was very easy to talk to. Informative, and truly has the patients best interests in mind. I was so nervous for a new provider, and he made me feel comfortable and and calm. Much appreciated.

Dr. Tai did a thorough evaluation of symptoms he noticed were the most prominent, as well as those that weren't. He went through the current psych meds I'm on, explained why some of them weren't right for me, and followed up by explanations to the new medications he thinks will be much more beneficial. I appreciated him listening to my concerns and taking the time to figure out the why and what. I am hoping between these new medications, along with therapy, I'll be able to feel better.

Dr. Tai Sowunmi has been a fantastic resource for me while I navigate through my mental health journey. Years of pressure and efforts left me very discouraged. Until now. Appointments are direct and to the point and solution oriented just as I need them to be. There has been no judgement and he has been welcoming to my truths. Though direct this doctor is warm and approachable. I believe with this resource I am on the right path to a full recovery and successful treatment plan.
