Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
The focus is the link between thoughts, feelings and actions. The use of 3 c's where clients learn to catch negative thoughts, check them for accuracy and change them to reality. There is homework such as journaling to combat procrastination. The focus is on current problems rather than past, addressing unhealthy distortions and learning positive thinking. Identifying and challenging automatic thoughts, engaging in activities to improve mood, gradually facing feared situations to reduce anxiety, learning methods to calm the body and mind. CBT is highly collaborative requiring active client participation.
Motivational Interviewing
Recognize the client's strengths, efforts, and past successes to build confidence. Asking open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing (OARS) to elicit "change talk" and support autonomy. Open questions requires more than yes or no Express Empathy: Utilize active listening to understand the client's perspective without judgment. Develop Discrepancy: Help the individual see the gap between their current behavior and their long-term goals. Roll with Resistance: Avoid arguing; reframe statements to avoid confrontation. Support Self-Efficacy: Believe in the person's ability to change and encourage their autonomy. Elicit Change Talk: Use questions that encourage the person to articulate their own reasons for change.
