New to Grow
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I started out my professional journey in Tennessee in 2010. I was licensed in Tennessee in 2015. I moved to New Mexico in 2019 and then to Virginia in 2022. My therapy techniques tend to be eclectic with mainly person centered (focusing on rapport and the therapeutic relationship), cognitive behavioral (looking at thought patterns), and creative techniques. I currently see people virtually but eventually hope to expand to see people in person and also have group therapy.
The first session will typically be about me getting background information from you including what is bringing you to therapy, previous therapy experience, previous trauma, family history/background, and any other areas that you feel are important.
I have an interest in theater. I searched for a period of time on ways to incorporate theater into counseling and I discovered the methods of J. L. Moreno and the area of Psychodrama. I try to incorporate these methods into my sessions on a regular basis. Some of these methods include role taking (you taking on a part of yourself or another person), role reversal (speaking to other parts of yourself and responding from that part), doubling (me speaking your unspoken truth) and the use of props. Most people struggle at first and it feels uncomfortable but afterward, people say and describe feeling much better from the experience.
I work best with addiction issues, depression, anxiety, trauma and LGBTQ issues. However, I will start with whatever issue is bringing you into therapy and will work with just about anyone who selects me as their therapist. I approach therapy as if you are the expert about you, not me. As such I help you find adequate solutions to problems that you are dealing with.
