James Roberts
I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who works with adults and older adolescents struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, life transitions, and feeling stuck. My style is practical, conversational, and collaborative. I've always been an easy person to talk to. I want therapy to be a place where you can speak openly, feel understood, and also begin making changes that improve your day-to-day life.
First session
Our first session is really about getting to know you—not fitting you into a diagnosis or checking boxes. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, what has been going on in your life, what you would like to change, and what has or hasn’t worked before. There is no pressure to tell me everything at once. We’ll begin identifying what you want from therapy and how we can work toward it together.
Strengths
I bring both professional training and a lot of life experience—good and bad—to the therapy room. I’m calm, approachable, direct when needed, and genuinely nonjudgmental. I tend to build rapport quickly and want clients to feel they can talk to me like a real person. I’ll support you, but I’ll also challenge negative thought patterns, avoidance, and beliefs that may be keeping you stuck. My goal is progress, not perfection.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is an older adolescent, adult, or older adult man or woman who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, relationship difficulties, life transitions, low self-esteem, or simply feeling stuck. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. I work best with people who are willing to be open, curious about themselves, and ready to better understand the patterns that may be getting in their way. I provide individual therapy in a calm, nonjudgmental setting where we can talk honestly, build insight, challenge unhelpful thoughts, and work toward meaningful change.
Treatment methods
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
In my practice, I use Solution-Focused Therapy to help clients identify what they want to be different, recognize strengths and coping skills they already have, and build on times when the problem has been less intense or more manageable. Rather than focusing only on what is wrong, we develop realistic goals and practical steps that can help clients move forward and create meaningful change.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
In my practice, I use CBT to help clients identify negative or distorted thought patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, avoidance, or feeling stuck. We look at how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another, challenge beliefs that may not be accurate or helpful, and develop more balanced ways of thinking. I also help clients recognize triggers and practice healthier behavioral responses outside of session.
