About me

Welcome! I’m Laurie and I am a licensed professional counselor in Michigan with 26 years of experience helping clients to examine issues that may be causing unhappiness and pain in their life. I want my clients to feel heard and respected at all times. I use a very warm, genuine approach and I believe in collaborative, compassionate therapy, while guiding clients to recognize their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and how these might influence each other.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Starting counseling may feel unfamiliar, so during your initial session(s) we will get to know each other and explore your counseling needs, including your experiences, strengths, challenges, and what you'd like to accomplish. I will ask questions, but if you ever feel uncomfortable talking about something, you are welcome to let me know. We will mutually define some goals and discuss how we will know when your goals have been met.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Each person is unique and I believe in a non-judgmental, client-centered approach in a counseling relationship in which the client feels comfortable examining factors that may be causing unhappiness and pain in their life. I also believe that individuals have the capability to overcome these factors and work toward happiness. We will explore strengths you already have, what barriers you may encounter along the way, and how we will determine when you have met your goals.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

With my education and training, I am best able to help those who feel they might be experiencing one or more of the following: anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem issues, communication, burnout and workplace stress, grief, loss, death or dying issues, life transitions, stress, emotional dysregulation, parenting issues, and other life challenges. I taught Death and Dying classes at a university level for many years and I specialize in grief and loss issues. At our initial meeting, we can decide if I would be a "good fit" for your needs.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Treatment Method: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) I've been using CBT in my practice for the past twenty-six years. It helps the client challenge recurring thoughts and manage their anxiety. We'll use CBT to recognize how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact with one another. We'll then use that knowledge to change your thinking patterns, which will help you lead a more relaxed and less stressful life.

Humanistic

People have an innate capacity for growth, self-understanding, and positive change when they are in a supportive, accepting environment.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

The goal is to identify, challenge, and replace self-defeating thoughts with healthier, logical, and productive thoughts and beliefs and recognizing that our beliefs about events, not the events themselves, can cause emotional distress.
