Hi, I’m Deirdre, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in North Carolina, and I’m available to share time and (virtual) space with you as you work toward change, healing, and GROWth! Have you been having a hard time trying to manage your thoughts and feelings alone? Are you frustrated with trying to be heard or understood by people around you who just don’t seem to get it, or are you frustrated with yourself for not doing what is in your best interests? Are you overwhelmed, not taking the best care of yourself that you could be, or longing to feel better? If any of this feels familiar, I want to celebrate you for taking steps to get connected to a helping professional to aid you in working to change that! I believe that engaging in therapy is one of the best things a person can do to safely carve out defined time to regularly focus on learning how to navigate internal and external stressors and challenges better, as well as how to attend to, care for, and love the self. I look forward to supporting and empowering you as we start where you are and work together to find ways to improve your quality of life and create more sustainable inner peace going forward.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

To start, I'll talk with you about what is specifically bringing you to therapy, now. I'll get information about your upbringing, your health, your interests, important relationships in your life, the challenges you're facing, and goals you have for yourself. We'll identify together what you'd like to work on most urgently, first. From there, we'll get to know each other, I'll listen to and provide feedback to you, will share information and education about topics of concern from a clinical perspective, highlight any patterns that I notice, ask questions to help you examine things from deeper or different perspectives, and share strategies for you to try to help manage any emotional discomfort you're feeling. We'll regularly review how things are progressing, how you're feeling, what you're trying, or may be averse to trying, what works well, what doesn't work, and use that data to create a plan of action to help you live the life you want to live more healthily and happily.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As a result of my education, clinical training, and my own life experience, which has itself been greatly enhanced by a positive therapeutic relationship, I greatly understand the importance of and offer my clients affirming compassionate, culturally competent, LGBTQIA+ friendly, sex-positive, trauma-informed, non-judgmental care. I connect well with persons who are willing to share deeply about their life experiences, what brings them joy, what troubles them, what makes them FEEL, what they’ve overcome, what motivates them, and what they’ve already tried to help themselves, so we can start where they TRULY are to create movement and change. I value the process of learning about people and figuring out ways to help them use what they already possess to help them reach their goals.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

I have over a decade of experience supporting and assisting women, men, and young adults in their work to make positive changes to their health and lives, via diagnostic assessments, pre-surgical psychological evaluations, talk therapy, and medical case management services. I have successfully assisted clients living with anxiety, depression, ADHD, chronic health conditions (HIV, Diabetes, chronic pain, etc.), relationship issues, sexual health concerns, financial difficulties, parenting challenges, codependency, disordered eating, and intimate partner violence to better understand and manage their mental health symptoms and improve their overall functioning.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

You'll learn about the connection and process of how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors often result after activating people, things, and/or events. We'll examine common thinking errors that may lead to emotional discomfort and behaviors that contribute to increased internal or interpersonal conflict or distress.

Motivational Interviewing

You'll learn about the Stages of Change and I'll check in with you regularly and discuss factors that make it possible, or not yet possible, for you to move forward to take consistent action to make your goals and dreams more of a reality.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I'll support your autonomy and ability to make desired changes in your life by showing up in a way that honors who you are as a unique person. I'll communicate with you with warmth, unconditional positive regard, empathy, compassion, genuineness, and reflect what you're sharing with me to help with increased insight and identification of opportunities for change.

Eclectic

I enjoy including activities and learning that speaks to your interests and the stressors you're working to manage. I include mindfulness activities, stress management and relaxation strategies, reading selections, music, television, or film analysis, as it pertains to increasing emotional expression and/or mental health education. I also include various concepts from other therapeutic modalities (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Mindfulness Therapy) that may be useful as you develop your coping practices, deepen your understanding of yourself, and work to create change in your life.
