I’m MacKenzie Miller, a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) with over five years of experience. I graduated from Merrimack College with a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have experience working within community-based agencies funded by the Department of Mental Health and most recently as a crisis clinician. Outside of work, my hobbies include exercising, coloring, going to the beach, watching tv shows and spending time with family and friends.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we will get to know each other! Once I understand your background and what is bringing you to therapy, we will create a treatment plan that will guide us throughout our time together. Before coming to your first session, you will complete intake paperwork including assessments that will give us a guide and understanding of where you are currently at and where you hope to be during our work together.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My clear and empathetic approach makes me a strong provider and a good match for a wide range of people. My ability to create a strong therapeutic alliance with my clients allows them to feel comfortable and relaxed while working with me. My modalities are adaptable as I have experience with people of all genders, races, sexual orientations, lived experiences, and diagnoses.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

I enjoy working with individuals who are struggling with some aspect of their lives they feel they need more support. I appreciate clients who are motivated and willing to partner with me during therapy to bring them to develop insight into what they are experiencing and learn how to overcome their struggles.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

Acceptance and commitment therapy is all that it says. Accepting yourself, understanding feelings, and moving forward without avoidance. ACT is a good intervention to have in therapy to help people not avoid their worries but instead learn how to live with them.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral therapy is utilized in a wide variety of settings. More specifically, talk therapy can be used to work with a person to identify and change their thoughts and patterns of behavior. In CBT, a person will work on identifying cognitive patterns and behaviors and changing this cycle into a healthier and more adaptive way of living.

Motivational Interviewing

When someone is struggling with a behavior such as substance abuse motivational interviewing can be helpful. Motivational interviewing is used to explore curiosity and empathy with the client to help understand their behaviors. This modality can support change, develop insight, and increase a person's positive self talk over time.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

I have utilized solution-based brief treatment in my crisis intervention work. When I am called into a crisis my first goal is to assess for safety and figure out what I can do or provide for the individual in the moment. The goal is a short solution-focused intervention and the treatment method is great while experiencing a crisis.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I believe in empowering people in their care. If people feel more empowered, more in control, and better able to take control of their lives, the better the success! I believe using person-centered therapy is a way to explore and grow and allows people to develop insight and understanding into themselves.
