Nashae Handy
I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over 10 years of advanced practice experience. I began my career as a Family Nurse Practitioner before earning my post-master’s certification in psychiatry from the University of Cincinnati. Over the past seven years, I’ve worked in inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, as well as geriatric and long-term care settings, caring for individuals with a wide range of mental health needs. I work with adults experiencing depression, anxiety, mood disorders, OCD, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, personality disorders, and other complex psychiatric conditions. My background also includes working with older adults experiencing dementia-related behavioral and emotional symptoms.
Over the past seven years, I’ve worked in inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, as well as geriatric and long-term care settings, caring for individuals with a wide range of mental health needs.
My primary focus is medication management, but I believe meaningful mental health treatment goes beyond prescribing medication. I take a collaborative approach that combines evidence-based medication management with supportive therapy, education, and practical coping skills. My goal is to help patients better understand themselves, improve daily functioning, and create lasting emotional stability. I believe therapy can exist without medication—but medication should never exist without support, reflection, and personal growth. I value honesty, openness, and active participation in treatment, and I work best with individuals who are willing to engage in the process, even when it feels difficult. My goal is to create a space where you feel heard, respected, and supported. Some of the most rewarding parts of my work are seeing people gain insight, build confidence, regain stability, and reach a place they once didn’t think was possible.
First session
During our first session, my goal is to get to know you and understand what brings you in. We’ll talk about your current symptoms, mental health history, medical history, previous treatment experiences, medications, and the goals you have for care. I also want to learn about your day-to-day life, stressors, supports, and anything else that may be affecting your emotional well-being. The first appointment is a space for open conversation without judgment. You do not need to have everything figured out before coming in. We will work together to identify concerns, clarify goals, and develop a treatment plan that feels appropriate for you. This may include medication management, supportive therapy, coping strategies, education, or referrals for additional therapy when needed. My goal is for you to leave feeling heard, supported, and with a clearer understanding of next steps.
Strengths
My greatest strength as a psychiatric nurse practitioner is my ability to truly listen and understand each patient’s experience. I strive to create a comfortable, safe, and nonjudgmental space where patients feel heard, respected, and supported. I believe meaningful mental health care starts with compassion, trust, and a strong therapeutic relationship. I approach each patient with empathy and genuine curiosity about their story, recognizing that no two experiences are the same. My goal is to provide thoughtful support, practical guidance, and individualized care that helps patients feel empowered in their treatment. I want people to feel comfortable being open about what they’re going through, even when those conversations are difficult. Creating that space for honesty, healing, and personal growth is one of the most important parts of my work.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is open-minded, transparent, and serious about improving their mental health. I work best with individuals who are willing to do the work, remain honest throughout the process, and trust the therapeutic and medication management approach. The best outcomes happen when we work together as a team, with commitment, accountability, and a shared goal of creating positive and lasting change.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
My treatment approach is compassion-focused and centered on creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment for each patient. I believe in actively listening and building a strong therapeutic relationship so patients feel comfortable being open about their experiences and concerns. Through a combination of therapy and thoughtful medication management, we work collaboratively toward improved mental health and overall well-being.
