Hello! I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with over 10 years of experience in the mental health field. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including substance misuse treatment, inpatient crisis stabilization, outpatient care, and community mental health. For the past 2 years, I have been serving as a PMHNP, providing care to individuals of all ages and addressing an extensive array of mental health conditions. My combination of professional expertise and personal experience allows me to approach each case with a deep understanding of the unique needs of my clients. I am passionate about helping individuals improve their mental health through effective medication management and supportive therapy, empowering them to live healthier, more fulfilling lives and reach their full potential.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In your first session with me, we’ll spend time establishing a comfortable and trusting relationship, which is the foundation for effective treatment. I’ll take a detailed history of your mental health, including any past diagnoses, treatments, and family history of mental health concerns. This allows me to better understand your experiences and challenges. We’ll also discuss your current symptoms, how they are affecting your daily life, and any specific goals or concerns you have. I’ll provide information about the treatment options available to you, including medication, therapy, or a combination, and we’ll discuss which options may be most beneficial for your situation. During this time, I encourage you to ask questions and share any concerns, as it’s important that you feel comfortable and informed about the process. Together, we’ll set realistic goals for your treatment and develop an initial plan to address your needs. The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other, and while it may not provide all the answers, it’s an essential step toward creating a path forward. My aim is to ensure that you leave feeling understood, supported, and with a clear sense of what the next steps will be in your mental health journey.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

In addition to my adaptability and empathy, I take pride in being a compassionate problem-solver. I recognize that mental health treatment is rarely a one-size-fits-all process, so I approach each case with an open mind, using a combination of therapeutic techniques, medication management, and lifestyle recommendations to find the best path forward. I’m particularly skilled at managing clients with complex or co-occurring conditions, helping them navigate both mental health and physical health challenges in an integrated way. I also value the importance of creating a sense of continuity and consistency in care. My clients can expect that I will be there to support them not only during sessions but also when it comes to follow-ups and ongoing care, ensuring we adjust the treatment plan as needed based on their progress. My goal is to make sure clients feel supported through every stage of their treatment, and I work hard to be a reliable resource for them in times of transition or self-discovery. Furthermore, I emphasize the importance of educating clients about their mental health and the treatment options available to them. I believe that empowering clients with knowledge gives them greater confidence in their decisions and encourages more active participation in their care. By fostering an environment of openness and transparency, I strive to ensure that clients are not only comfortable but also feel in control of their mental health journey. Ultimately, my greatest strength is my ability to offer personalized care that combines compassion, clinical expertise, and a deep respect for each client’s unique experiences and values.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I am particularly well-suited to support individuals who may be struggling with chronic mental health conditions, those who are navigating significant life transitions, or individuals facing complex, co-occurring disorders. Whether it’s someone dealing with substance use issues, trauma, or a history of mental health treatment that hasn’t been effective, I focus on providing compassionate care. I am also adept at working with clients who prefer a collaborative, strengths-based approach, where we explore their values, build on their resilience, and develop personalized plans for long-term mental health improvement. Ultimately, my goal is to empower clients to take an active role in their mental health journey and find sustainable solutions to improve their lives.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centered approach that I incorporate into my practice to help individuals navigate ambivalence and make positive changes in their behaviors. By building a collaborative, non-judgmental relationship with clients, I create an environment where they feel heard and understood. I use reflective listening to explore their mixed feelings about change and help them articulate their own reasons for wanting to make a shift. Through affirming their strengths and past successes, I boost their confidence in their ability to change.

Dr Cozier was very personable and easy to talk to right at the start. She asked me questions that seemed to help her get to know me as a person as well as help navigate my ADHD. She offered a book about my diagnosis that I am excited to dive into. The session felt natural and I am glad I chose her.

I have not been to a therapy session a very long time because I couldn't connect with the therapist and todays session made me say why didn't I find Barbara sooner. I walked away heard and happy to move forward.
