Cognitive Restructuring: Identifying and challenging negative or distorted thought patterns (cognitive distortions) and replacing them with more balanced thoughts. Behavioral Activation: Encouraging patients to engage in activities that bring pleasure or accomplishment, counteracting patterns of avoidance or withdrawal. Exposure Therapy: Gradually exposing individuals to feared situations or objects to reduce avoidance and anxiety (often used in anxiety or PTSD treatment). Christian counseling integrates psychological principles with Christian faith-based approaches to support emotional and spiritual growth. It aims to help individuals address mental health and life challenges while drawing upon Biblical teachings and spiritual practices. This approach is often preferred by individuals seeking guidance that aligns with their faith values and incorporates prayer, scripture, and other religious elements.
Assessment and Crisis Planning: The initial phase focuses on assessing the level of suicide risk and developing a comprehensive safety plan. The safety plan often includes steps for recognizing warning signs, identifying supportive contacts, and creating a list of emergency resources. Understanding the Suicidal Mindset: Patients are guided to understand the cognitive distortions and thought patterns that contribute to suicidal thoughts, such as hopelessness, feeling like a burden, or believing that things will never improve. Identifying these patterns helps to clarify the underlying issues. Cognitive Restructuring: This involves challenging and modifying distorted thoughts related to self-worth, future outlook, and perceived support. Therapists work with patients to replace suicidal ideation with more balanced and hopeful perspectives.
