Melissa Burnett
I primarily provide talk therapy, which I find most clients prefer; however, I specialize in and frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which works well in almost all cases. I typically work with clients over the age of 18. I have the most experience and comfort working with those with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and seeking to improve communication skills. I attempt to create a comfortable and open environment for my clients. I don't believe a client should feel as though they are sitting in a 'clinical' or 'stuffy' setting.
First session
You can expect to ask me questions about how sessions will go, ask questions related to therapy or how sessions will work, and expect time to warm up to the session to help reduce anxiety before the session.
Strengths
I am a very transparent clinician and I bring this into my practice with a "no sugar coating," approach to treatment. My years of experience has taught me that a majority of clients prefer this type of approach as well as honesty when working mutually towards the client's stated goals.
Ideal clients
It is difficult to label a client as ideal as we all have different ways of expressing ourselves and our needs - some are thoughtful and well prepared when others are uncertain but know a change is needed. A client who understands their needs are unmet to some degree or that therapy is to help themselves and not necessarily those around them is most certainly a helpful approach. Therapy is not a one size fits all by any means, however my approach is to tailor your treatment to your needs.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I find CBT to be helpful for many problems - we will determine what treatment is best for the client after initial assessment and building rapport.
