New to Grow
I was drawn into the counseling field from a very early age, always curious about people, their relationships, ideas people embrace, choices they make. How do we solve problems or sometimes find them beyond our wisdom and imagination to solve? Even when we do our very best, sometimes we can’t seem to get it right. That can feel overwhelming and finding a way out can seem impossible. A warm and listening heart can be a big help providing the support needed to find our way again. With over 40 years of experience, I have helped a wide variety of people with many concerns.
Our first session is about getting acquainted, not completing an intake checklist. It will feel like a conversation. We will talk about what brings you here today. I want to hear your whole story: where have you been; what have you tried; what matters most to you? What do you enjoy and hope to be doing in the future? When we end the session, you will feel like you have a sense of direction and a good understanding of how we will work together. Most important is that you will leave feeling heard.
Therapy works best when we build it around you. We will have an active exchange of thoughts, ideas, feelings. I tend to imagine your experiences as you describe them and use that to help you understand your patterns, build skills and move forward. We will collaborate. You will get feedback. Sometimes we will laugh. Humor is so healthy and powerfully supports healing. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) and Problem Solving Therapy, organically choosing the approach that best fits where you are in your therapy.
I work with clients whose primary concerns are quite varied. Those concerns can be depression, anxiety, trauma history, relationship struggles, acute and chronic illness or grief. I find people who want to learn more about themselves and their issues, who want to develop options for moving forward, benefit from my approach. How do you feel about exploring what you are doing and how that is working for you? Do you have a faith or spiritual foundation that helps you make sense of the world and helps you heal when you feel broken? Let's mobilize your strengths so you feel better prepared to take on life's joys and challenges.
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help clients understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another. Together, we identify unhelpful thought patterns, explore how they may be affecting your daily life, and practice strategies for responding in healthier, more effective ways. I take a collaborative and practical approach, helping you build skills you can use both during and outside of our sessions.
Psychoeducation is about introducing ideas and techniques that may be new to you. Sometimes it's about helping you see things from a different perspective. We often struggle with situations that we don't understand well or when we don't have a lot of practice handling them. Psychoeducation is designed to help fill some of those gaps.
