Hello, I'm Shirley, a PhD and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 20 years of experience. For the past five years, I've been dedicated to providing online therapy to individuals, families, and couples. My practice covers a wide range of issues. My therapeutic philosophy is rooted in the person-centered approach. I strive to meet each client 'where they are' and serve as a catalyst for their unique journey of self-discovery and self-identification. I believe that therapy should be a collaborative process, where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives. I work from a systemic, collaborative, strength-based approach that is mindful of cultural, ethnic, and economic concerns. I utilize leading psychological modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the Gottman Couples Approach, Solution-Focused Therapy, Family Therapy and Existential approaches. These methods allow me to tailor my approach to each client's specific needs and goals, ensuring that they receive the most effective and personalized care possible.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

When we meet initially, we will discuss the problems/concerns that brought you to counseling. I will ask questions, listen to you and suggest a plan for improving these problems. It is important that you feel comfortable talking to me about the issues that are bothering you. Sometimes these issues will include things that are very personal and difficult to discuss. For most people, knowing that what they say will be kept private helps them feel more comfortable and have more trust in their counselor or therapist. Privacy, also called confidentiality, is an important and necessary part of the therapy process. You will also be given an opportunity to ask questions about my qualifications and any concerns that you have about the counseling process.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Working with me means engaging in a supportive and non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings openly. Together, we'll work towards your goals and help you build a more fulfilling and balanced life.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Through the continued application of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques in my practice, I have found that clients begin to recognize how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other. This awareness enables them to challenge reoccurring negative thoughts more effectively. The client's ability to identify and modify maladaptive thinking patterns often helps to decrease overall levels of anxiety and stress.

Gender-affirming therapy

Being transgender isn’t a mental health condition, but the trans community faces higher rates of mental health challenges than any other LGBTQ+ identity group. As a gender affirming therapist, I support and affirm an individual’s gender identity when it conflicts with the gender they were assigned at birth. I find that by using a gender affirming therapeutic approach, where emotions, questions, and concerns, about gender can be explored, clients become less depressed, anxious and more hopeful about their future.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I strive to meet each client where they are and serve as a catalyst for their unique journey of self-discovery and self-identification. I believe that therapy should be a collaborative process, where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives. This method allows me to tailor my approach to each client's specific needs and goals, ensuring that they receive the most effective and personalized care possible. Working with me means engaging in a supportive and non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings openly.

Family Therapy

I work with families and couples in intimate relationships to nurture change and personal development. This involves improving skills such as being assertive, being diplomatic, resolving conflict, and listening well. My focus emphasizes family relationships as an important factor in individual psychological health. By helping couples and families communicate more effectively and understand the dynamics of good relationships, they increase insight and clarify areas of difficulty and to develop coping skills to manage stress
