Hello! I am a board-certified family nurse practitioner and psychiatric nurse practitioner with over 29 years of practice. Having extensive experience in these two specialities has provided a world of knowledge to draw upon when it comes to helping people achieve their best. I truly love what I do. I take a team approach with my patients in providing their care. It would be a privilege to help you along your journey to better health.
Our first session will consist of getting to know you and identifying the goals most important in your care. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment approach as everyone is uniquely different in what best meets their needs. I will be your partner in helping you reach your goals and provide best treatment strategies during our time together. A foundation of respect and trust is achieved one step at a time at your pace.
I take the time to truly listen and understand what matters to you when considering your treatment. I view each patient as unique and worthy of my attention and professional approach. At the same time, I will meet you on your level to help foster a bond of trust. Earning your confidence is only achieved through careful attention to detail like staying current on best treatment practices, creating a calm and relaxing environment, and striving to leave you feeling better at the end of our session together.
Navigating the transitions through life is always a challenge. You may have struggled for years attempting to resolve both personal or professional problems that have limited your enjoyment and success in both childhood and adulthood. Thoughts of feeling inadequate, sad, being overwhelmed, or the inability to concentrate/focus affect many of us at some point. I am ready to help you when these reach the level of interfering in your everyday life and hold you back. I can help you overcome these negative emotions and feel renewed.
Motivational interviewing is a person centered method of counseling which means that the focus is on figuring out what the patient wants rather than what the therapist thinks is best for them. This method helps the patient resolve feelings of ambivalence to uncover internal motivation in order to change their behavior. Motivational interviewing requires high levels of empathy, reflective listening and the ability to form a strong bond in a short period of time.
Supportive therapy aims to build a person's confidence and self-esteem while utilizing active listening, validation of feelings, and emotional support. Evidence suggests that supportive psychotherapy is as effective as psychoanalysis or perhaps more effective in some cases. Supportive therapy may be used in the treatment of many mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, grief, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), substance use disorders, and bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, relationship disorders and personality disorders.
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is a modified form of cognitive therapy that uses mindfulness practices such as meditation, present moment awareness and breathing exercises. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is used to primarily treat depression. The patient is taught to separate negative patterns of thought that leads to a decline in mood before a difficult state of mind takes hold.
Psychoeducation is a therapeutic intervention that provides support for patients to help them understand and cope with illness. Psychoeducation is commonly used in the treatment of many mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders and schizophrenia. Problem-solving skills and communication skills are taught in an environment of empathy and support.
