What typically surprises people is that I am the 11th of 13 children - all from the same parents. Growing up with so many siblings has given me a great opportunity to learn about family dynamics and effective discipline. My parents did a great job of maintaining a safe and well-behaved home, and I use their example as a template while also incorporating my own experience as a parent for working with families today.
As for my approach to therapy, I use several different theories depending on the need of the client; however, my primary mode is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). It just fits my personality. If you are looking for a therapist who focuses solely on your emotions and how you're feeling on any given day, then I will not be a good fit for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for a therapist who not only does all that but who will also listen to everything you say (as well as the meaning behind what you say) and then challenge your thinking habits to help you find more effective and productive thinking patterns, then I'm on board for that. I learned a long time ago that many clients do not want things "Sugar Coated", but rather prefer their therapist to be respectfully bold and blunt. If this is who you are looking for in a therapist, then let's get to work.

I approach this work with careful attention to emotional safety, preparation, stabilization, and readiness.
Therapy does not need to be rushed. I value building a genuine therapeutic relationship where you can feel comfortable exploring difficult experiences, recognizing your strengths, and making meaningful changes that feel realistic and sustainable. I’m Maitey “Mya” Etienne, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the founder of Mind & Heart Connect. For over 16 years, I’ve worked with people who are carrying a lot sometimes quietly. Anxiety, relationship problems, grief, trauma, parenting stress, overthinking, major life changes, or simply feeling like you’ve lost yourself somewhere along the way.
My style is not stiff or overly clinical. I’m going to talk with you, not at you. We’ll laugh when appropriate, have the uncomfortable conversations when necessary, and get to the heart of what’s really going on.
I believe therapy should be a place where you can take the mask off. You don’t have to come in knowing exactly what to say or where to start. Bring the confusion, the frustration, the tears, the “I don’t even know anymore” we can start there.
At Mind & Heart Connect, the goal isn’t to create a perfect version of you. It’s to help you understand yourself, heal what needs healing, set boundaries without guilt, communicate more effectively, and feel more confident in the life you’re creating.
A WORLD VIEW approach to overcoming setbacks.
