I’m Micheal Franklin, and my journey into therapy began in a blue-collar family where my relatives worked in textile mills, battery plants, and furniture factories. Growing up, I aspired to carve a different path, aiming to be the first in my family to earn a college degree. I graduated from Western Piedmont Community College in Drug and Alcohol Technology and earned an Associate in Arts in 1996. I then continued my education at Gardner-Webb University, obtaining my Bachelor’s in Science in Human Services. Recognizing that the job market wouldn’t provide enough financial stability, I joined the Marines in 1998. During my service, I got married and welcomed a baby boy, which motivated me to seek part-time work with troubled adolescents and teens facing addiction issues. After leaving the Marines in 2003, I worked in a group home for adolescents and later became a Prevention Supervisor for adolescent substance use treatment. I also served as the lead treatment therapist for a Men's Intensive Outpatient Program at the Cognitive Connection in Hickory, NC. My passion for helping others led me to teach parenting classes and collaborate with Child Protective Services. I pursued my Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of West Florida while gaining experience in Community Mental Health. I also worked in a drug court program for two years. Since becoming licensed in 2014, I have dedicated my career to supporting clients dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, personality disorders, and life transitions.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Micheal's process is that he will send you some assessments to complete online such as a run down of your mental health history and the current problem that you're dealing with at this time. Micheal wants his clients to feel relaxed during his appointments as he will state time and time again that he believes therapy is a Judgement Free Zone as we all have our own screw ups and mishaps in the past. Micheal will complete your assessment which generally will take 90 minutes as he is very thorough in this process as he wants to hear you and see you for who you're. Micheal will provide some feedback and please note that he is direct and isn't one to sugar coat anything. Micheal will provide you some resources and will help you to develop your treatment plan so you understand the direction that you will be going in prior to your next visit. Please note that Micheal has a 50 dollar No Show Fee so if you have something that comes up please message him, give him a call, and/or text him so that he isn't sitting and waiting for you to show as this is when his clients get charged.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Micheal has multiple reviews on Google and his client reports that he is a good listener, he gives them resources to help them find solutions to their problems, and he doesn't believe in keeping his clients in therapy long term if they don't need it. Micheal will always go the extra mile for his clients and is an empathetic and direct type of therapist. Micheal will share with you some of his personal experiences if he believes that it is in the best interest of his clients and that it will help them to grow as a person. Micheal has solid assessment and psychotherapy skills as he is well versed in assessing his clients, helping his clients formulate their goals, and will hold his clients accountable for what they have said that they will do.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I've been using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for the past 13 years to help my clients overcome their negative thoughts. It's all about connecting the dots between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I see how important it is for my clients to understand this connection; it’s a key piece in overcoming their challenges. I use CBT to treat anxiety, depression, and grief/loss. It also helps build healthy boundaries and navigate life's ups and downs. I'm committed to helping my clients face their struggles head-on and fostering personal growth.

Motivational Interviewing

I use motivational interviewing to help clients dealing with alcohol and drug addictions, porn addiction, cheating behaviors, and self-esteem issues. My approach is to challenge clients on their values and beliefs, helping them process the reasons behind their thoughts and actions. By pointing out when their values and beliefs don't align with their actions and behaviors, I guide them towards meaningful change. I'm known for being direct in my responses, and my clients often feel challenged after each session, which propels their personal growth.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

I have experience with Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help my clients overcome past traumatic issues and move forward with their lives. I've been trained and am a Trauma Informed Care provider, ensuring that my clients receive the support they need in a sensitive and effective manner.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients overcome their loss of purpose and navigate various life transitions. This approach enables my clients to accept their current situations and move forward in their lives. I have a great deal of experience working with Veterans transitioning from active duty to civilian life, providing them with the support they need during this significant change.
