Shannon Murphy
I help adults move from surviving to thriving. I create a safe space and supportive relationship where clients can gain a better understanding of behaviors that developed to protect/help them previously, but could be hindering them now. I help empower clients to utilize their strengths or put new tools in their emotional toolbelt to overcome challenging chapters in life. I tailor my approach to fit each client, sometimes focusing on building tools to cope with immediate stressors and sometimes unpacking and processing past experiences and/or traumas, as appropriate for and desired by each client. I focus on working with adult individuals struggling with trauma (including PTSD and complex PTSD), depression, anxiety, relationship issues, stress, and substance use disorders. I aim to help clients better understand the connections between their thoughts, feelings, and actions, and empower them to harness that connection to reach their goals in a way that fits their unique personality, situation, and priorities, while honoring their expertise about their own experience and path forward. I am trained in various modalities, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), brainspotting, and solutions-focused therapy. I also utilize IFS-informed parts work and approach clients from a person-centered and relational lens.
First session
The first session is an opportunity for us to start building a safe place where you can explore what you want to achieve through therapy and feel out if we will be a good fit to help you reach your treatment goals
Strengths
I show up in the therapy space as my genuine self who is willing to be both my client's biggest supporter and someone who will challenge them when appropriate. I also am not afraid to include humor (when appropriate!) in sessions.
Ideal clients
I support clients who are looking to make a change even if they do not yet know what that is. I determine what works best for each client, with some clients benefiting from exploring and processing how the past is impacting the future and other clients benefiting from learning immediate coping skills to support the ability to move forward in a more effective way.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I utilize CBT to support clients with challenging cognitive distortions and limiting beliefs and creating new pathways for alternative thoughts and positive self-talk
Brainspotting
I use Brainspotting as a bottoms-up approach to trauma processing to especially support clients who continue to experience impacts where their feelings and reactions do not align with what they cognitively understand, thus requiring an intervention to reprocess the traumatic memories and experiential learnings
Relational
I am a relational therapist such that the relationship between myself and the client itself can be a safe space where the client is held in positive regard and can grow through that dynamic
Cognitive Processing (CPT)
I utilize CPT as a tool for supporting clients with processing PTSD
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I utilize DBT to support clients with learning skills to support improved emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness to help clients minimize impacts from acting on urges
