Mackenzie Smith
Hello, I am Mackenzie from Shifting Perspectives LLC. I would describe my personality as easy-going and direct. I believe therapy is most effective when there is a strong two-way directional relation, which may take time to build. I welcome clients to find/use their voice (as therapy is personalized) to inform me what's working and what is not. I will work alongside you to provide personalized therapy tailored to your goals, using evidence-based approaches like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and offer techniques to help you develop coping skills, regulate emotions, and build the stamina needed to create the changes you would like to see, in the life that is your own.
First session
Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and begin discussing what brings you to therapy and what you hope to work toward. Therapy works best as a collaborative relationship, and every therapist and client brings their own style and perspective. You’re welcome to tell me what feels helpful—or what doesn’t. If I’m moving too quickly, an observation doesn’t feel right, or you’d like to try a different approach, please let me know. We can check in and adjust together. These sessions are for you, and our work should support your comfort, needs, and goals. My goal is to create a space where you can show up exactly as you are—no pressure, no judgment, just a place to talk, be heard, and most importantly be challenged towards reaching your goals.
Strengths
My goal is to create a space where you can show up exactly as you are—no pressure, no judgment, just a place to talk, be heard, and most importantly be challenged. It' is my opinion that old patterns are like gum; stubborn to pull off as patterns often feel deeply embedded in our habits, thoughts, and reactions. Self-awareness and shifting perspectives are key. I will often push individuals but also understand the value of holding space/silence.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone navigating concerns in one or more areas of life, such as relationships, work, or overall well-being. They may be feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or curious about patterns in how they think, feel, and behave. They’re open to seeking support and interested in understanding themselves more deeply—exploring what drives their responses, which patterns still serve them, and which they may want to adjust. Together, we can work toward more intentional thoughts, behaviors, and ways of managing emotions.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients explore how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another. Together, we identify patterns that may be contributing to distress, consider whether those patterns are helpful, and practice developing more balanced ways of thinking and responding. We may also set small, practical goals or try strategies between sessions, then reflect on what worked and adjust as needed. CBT is collaborative and tailored to each client’s needs and goals.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients build practical skills for managing intense emotions, coping with distress, staying present, and navigating relationships. Together, we’ll identify situations and patterns that feel challenging, then practice strategies that can be applied in daily life. DBT balances acceptance and change: we work to understand your experiences without judgment while also exploring new ways of responding. We’ll tailor the skills to your goals and review what’s helpful as we go.
Gottman method
I use the Gottman Method to help couples better understand their relationship patterns and build skills for communicating and resolving conflict. Together, we explore each partner’s perspective, identify strengths and areas of concern, and practice tools for listening, expressing needs, and managing disagreements. We may also work on rebuilding trust, deepening friendship and emotional connection, and creating shared meaning. The approach is collaborative and tailored to each couple’s goals, with progress reviewed along the way.
