Andrew Hosier
Greetings! I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in CA. I completed my bachelors and masters degree in Psychology from Vanguard University in southern CA. I help adults 18-and-up learn new ways of responding to difficult thoughts, feelings and relationships in order to live life in a way they'll be proud of. My goal is to help you experience life fully while responding skillfully and effectively.
First session
In our first session together, we'll get to know each other by my providing a brief introduction about my existence in the world followed with our covering the present context of your life and the main issue prompting you to seek therapy. I'll explain my way of helping people to make sure it's something you can buy into. If you believe we're a good fit then we move into identifying the desired changes you're hoping to achieve and collaborating in how to achieve that.
Strengths
I've had many experiences that contributed to my becoming a therapist and equipped me with strengths that are now useful. My shyness and social anxiety has developed a capacity for helping others feel safe and comfortable. I was raised in difficult socioeconomic circumstances that have allowed me to relate with many different demographics of people. I personally understand the difficulty of living with less than one needs and the profound effects that has on mental health. My suffering from alcoholism and addictive behavior has allowed me to understand (to the degree possible) the depths of pain one can experience when struggling in life. I believe my sense of humor can be helpful to make therapy fun while not being dismissive or invalidating. I firmly believe in autonomy and respect and will use my skills and abilities only in the service of the change you want, not in what I think you should want.
Ideal clients
I enjoy helping people struggling with painful thoughts and feelings who are willing to learn and experiment with new ways of responding to their pain. This pain may manifest as anxiety, depression, anger, trauma memories, addictive behaviors and/or dissatisfying relationships. I have a personal history with social anxiety and alcoholism that contributed to my living well below my capacity, so I have a special fondness for working with anyone who can identify with that sentiment. If you're open to living your life in way that you care about while maintaining a sense of humor in the process then we may be a good fit.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
Ive been learning about, training in and increasingly incorporating ACT into my practice for close to 5yrs. This model resonates with me personally due to its emphasis on living a rich a meaningful life aligned with your values; while learning skills to reduce the impact of the pain you inevitably accumulate while living such a life. I want my clients to develop 'psychological flexibility' in order to be in the present moment, increase awareness of their thoughts, develop willingness to experience difficult feelings while doing what matters to them
Person-centered (Rogerian)
This approach is the foundation of how I attempt to approach everyone in my life. It's a way of being that informs everything in my therapeutic approach. Unconditional positive regard, genuineness and accurate empathy are the building blocks of an effective therapeutic relationship from which change can take place. `
Motivational Interviewing
MI was a staple in my professional development, especially when working in addiction treatment for many years. It's a type of communication that helps people to find their own reasons for change. Real and lasting change tends to happen when people do so for their own reasons. I value autonomy and respect and this form of communication is an embodiment of that.
