New to Grow
As a trauma-informed counselor with 28 years of experience in education, (which includes my serving the past 15 years as a school counselor), I understand the impact adverse childhood experiences have on students' academic achievement and relationships with others. Using compassion and understanding, I love helping clients to navigate the challenges they encounter. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Trust Based Relationship Interventions can help us develop goals and strategies for better managing ADHD, anxiety, depression, or family changes that may impact their self regulation, academic achievement, and relationships with others. Supporting children, teens, adults and grandparents who are raising grandchildren, is a privilege. My approach blends clinical expertise with a biblical perspective. I try to bring both my professional and personal understanding, from my experiences as a mother, grandmother, and former school counselor as I listen to and work with clients in a safe space. My goal is to build trust and connection with each client. I would love to help you identify your counseling goals. Please call and leave a message. I will return your call as soon as possible. I am passionate about creating a space where my clients don't just survive hard things -but grow through them while feeling seen, safe and supported.
During our first session together, we will briefly review your intake paperwork so you can ask any questions or express any concerns that you may have concerning the paperwork. Then we will spend a few minutes introducing ourselves. I will listen as you share your reason for seeking counseling, and as time allows, you can share what you hope to gain from these counseling sessions. As the session comes to a close, we will discuss a brief treatment plan based on whether you want to continue treatment and what we agree that will look like.
My sessions with clients are structured, action-oriented and focused on the present. We will collaborate and work together to set, clear, measurable age-appropriate goals. Each session will have an action plan (homework) that will encourage clients to practice at home what they learn in each session between sessions. Clients will learn to identify cognitive distortions (stinking thinking), and how to change their thoughts into something more beneficial to their daily living. Our focus will be on their thoughts. First we will identify false beliefs and negative thoughts. Next we will develop an awareness of how those negative thoughts can cause specific negative feelings, which can then cause negative behaviors. Once aware of this cycle, the client can begin to reframe their negative thinking into something more positive and beneficial to their daily living. During these sessions the client will learn practical and evidenced based tools that they can use in their day to day life to better achieve their self regulation emotion management goal.
I serve clients ages 6-65+ who are seeking mental health support. As a former teacher and school counselor, I have 29 years of experience working with male and female students ages 6-17, as well as their parents and teachers. I am equipped to serve young professional women navigating career transitions and midlife women juggling many responsibilities. I am also able to support women facing retirement and the changes that occur with that season of life. In addition, my husband and I were trained and have served as respite foster parents while also parenting our own children. To this day, I also desire to counsel with adoptive and foster moms on their parenting journey, as well as their adopted, fostered, and biological children. I love working, especially with grandmothers raising grandchildren. Serving mothers, sisters, and wives of those struggling with substance use disorder is another area where I am best positioned to serve. My clients seek strategies for managing emotions, ADHD, anxiety, grief, divorce, separation, broken relationships, life direction, boundaries, transitions, and fatigue, to name just a few. They also seek counseling to learn strategies for coping with their life situations so they can be their best selves, better equipped with self-care, and refueled to care for others as needed.
