(she/her)
Welcome! It can be intimidating to sign up for therapy, so I applaud you for being here! I am Christine Kirby, a Licensed Mental Health Therapist for the past 29 years. I graduated from New York University and have worked in various inpatient and outpatient mental health programs. I primarily use a mindfulness-cognitive behavioral, trauma-informed approach to therapy. I enjoy working together with my clients to build on strengths and manage feelings of anxiety and depression, whatever the root cause. I am particularly passionate about helping young adults find their way in the world, working with parents who have children with special needs, couples counseling, healing from trauma, assisting women through the menopause transition, and navigating family and career challenges. We will partner to help balance emotions and strengthen your relationships with yourself, family, friends, and coworkers. I value creating a space for you to openly discuss your feelings and experiences in a nonjudgmental setting that can help you better manage the stress of life.
Our first session will be different from future sessions. During our first session, I will spend 10 minutes or so orienting you to therapy, how it works, what sessions look like, and the rules of online therapy. When clients complete the intake form prior to the first session, the "intake" portion of our first session can be cut in half, and we can move from intake to therapy quickly. It is important that you have your camera on for all sessions to mimic the in-person experience and be comfortable for your session. Clients join sessions from home, in their car, or at work. The beauty of online therapy is that you can have it anywhere in NC! Please ensure you are in a confidential setting. We are not having a session while you are at Chick-fil-A. (Though I love Chick-fil-A.) If you have children, consider that we probably do not want them hearing your session details, depending on their age.
I highly value creating a safe space for my clients to express themselves when others may not listen to what they have to say. Sometimes, we just need to get thoughts out into the universe and out of us! My strengths are compassion, listening, and developing strategies to improve our lives!
Over the years, I have found that clients heal faster when we partner to reach mutually agreed-upon goals. This may include creating joint plans and giving resources to review between sessions. I will provide psychoeducation to my clients utilizing the latest research in psychology to help them move forward!
I gently assist clients in examining their thoughts, working to note them without judgment, and reframe or ignore them while reflecting on their impact on our emotions and actions/behaviors. This helps reduce unwanted actions and increase desired behavior.
I guide clients through identifying their current values and how they may have changed over time. We work together to decide if their relationships, jobs, and life are matching up with their current values. We then work toward inviting people, places, and things into our lives that match our values to decrease our depression and anxiety.
I use DBT to assist with relationships, communication, learning to regulate emotions, and finding gratitude and joy in life. We also examine our sensory processing, nervous system, and somatic (mind/body) experiences as they significantly impact mental health.
I primarily utilize the principles of the Gottman Method to assist couples in increasing their joy in relationships, learning to be each other's friend again, improving communication, affair recovery, seeing each other for all our strengths and areas to grow, and working to increase overall intimacy. I also specialize in helping couples who are raising children with special needs.
I create a safe, non-judgmental place where clients can explore past or current traumas and begin to heal. I assist clients in understanding the impact of trauma on their lives and learning new strategies to address trauma and create the life they want!
