Robert Masoner
I graduated from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 2016 and am board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I enjoy working with clients from a variety of backgrounds and am experienced in treating a wide variety of mental health problems. I enjoy working with my patients closely, developing a plan alongside my patients. I find that treatment is more effective when the patient feels heard and their concerns are addressed.
First session
I will make treatment recommendations for medications but we will work together to come up with a plan. The initial sessions tend to be longer so that I can get an idea of what is really going on. Follow up sessions are typically shorter in duration and focus mostly on medication management. I am open to feedback about the plan during my sessions.
Strengths
Being open minded is a key to successfully treating patients. Listening to patients is the key to understanding them as a whole, rather than simply thinking of patients as having a singular problem to fix. I like to understand the complex nature of my patient's problems and determining the best management with regard to medications.
Ideal clients
I treat adults with a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, stress, sleep problems, relationship difficulties, and mood disorders. I also work with people who are not sure what is causing their symptoms but would like an evaluation and treatment recommendations. Some patients are new to mental health treatment, while others have worked with therapists or psychiatrists in the past. My approach is collaborative and based on each person's individual needs and goals. Treatment may include medication management, psychotherapy, or both, depending on what is most appropriate.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
While my practice focuses on psychiatric evaluation and medication management, I routinely incorporate brief cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions into medication follow-up visits when appropriate. These sessions are not intended to replace ongoing psychotherapy. Rather, they are designed to reinforce practical skills that complement medication treatment. Examples of CBT interventions may include identifying and challenging unhelpful thought patterns, developing healthier coping strategies, behavioral activation for depression, anxiety management techniques, exposure principles when appropriate, sleep hygiene, stress management, and problem-solving strategies. I also provide psychoeducation about psychiatric conditions, medications, and symptom management to help patients better understand their treatment. Patients who would benefit from more comprehensive psychotherapy are encouraged to establish care with a dedicated therapist. I view medication management and ongoing psychotherapy as complementary treatments that often produce the best long-term outcomes when used together.
