LISW, 15 years of experience
I have been a professional social work counselor for around 15 years, working primarily with adults that struggle with severe persistent mental illness. I have been able to utilize and hone my skills of active listening, empathy and guidance over the years to help clients gain resiliency throughout the struggles they may face with SPMI. Over the course of my career thus far, I have worked with clients from varying backgrounds and age ranges of 18 up to senior adults, helping them discover new coping skills and listening to their journey.
The first session will be getting to know each other, either by brief history or history of what they may be facing personally that could impact their day-to-day functioning. I will also provide some brief general background to myself and experience, as well as go over how often client would like to meet and duration.
Some of my greatest strengths are active listening and support the client through supportive feedback as opposed to direct suggestions. I have worked with adults that have been facing all sorts of diagnosis and barriers and have experience in listening or helping to guide all.
I have worked primarily with adults who may struggle with severe persistent mental illness with a wide variety of diagnoses, backgrounds and age range. Client who benefit from active listening along with acute guidance and suggestions seem to work best with my style.
Around fifteen years of experience with motivational interviewing that helps to balance active listening and giving information/advice to clients. This is a good technique to use to help balance those that seek some sort of guidance and those that want to be heard. I've had many years of practice regarding this method with clients for all backgrounds and age range.

Highly recommend Tom for his kind heart and willing ness to help identify alternative solutions that we may not see because we have tunnel vision as we’re going through life events. There is no judgement with Tom and he’s always willing to let you sort of dictate how the session goes based on your individual needs for the day.

Today was my first visit with Tom. I’ve never had counseling services before, however I’ve had quite a few major life changes over the past several years that I had never addressed. Tom allowed me the opportunity to explain just about everything while interjecting if felt he needed to or if he had valuable feedback. It was sort of a word vomit session on my end, but I think I needed that. Tom provided nice feedback in the end and scheduled a follow-up.
