My client's often have a history of past trauma, substance use, struggles with managing their emotions and a desire to understand themselves better.
I believe it is essential to recognize how a client's cultural identity and systemic factors shape their experiences and overall well-being. My role is to honor the client as the expert in their own life while approaching the therapeutic space with humility and inclusivity.
As a clinician who often works in substance use, it is important to meet a client where they are at in their change process, and help them foster meaningful change. This is often done by supporting the client in establishing internal motivation, which often results in more sustained change.
