Nkwa McCarthy

LCSW-C (she/her)7 years of experience

I'm a down-to-earth, easygoing therapist who believes that therapy doesn't have to feel intimidating or overly formal. I bring warmth, compassion, honesty, and a little humor into the therapy room because sometimes laughter is just as important as having those difficult conversations. I'm the type of therapist who will listen without judgment, meet you where you are at, and also gently challenge you when needed. I believe in keeping things real while creating a space where you feel comfortable being yourself. You don't have to worry about saying the right things or having everything figured out.

I enjoy helping clients connect the dots, see situations from different perspectives, and recognize patterns they may not have noticed before.

My approach is conversational, relatable, and genuine. Whether we're laughing together, working through life's challenges, or having those uncomfortable but necessary conversations, my goal is to help you feel heard, supported, and empowered. I also believe that therapy is about gaining insight, breaking unhealthy patterns, discovering your strengths, and making meaningful changes in a person's life. I'll support you through the process, celebrate your progress, and encourage you to become the best version of yourself.

First session

Our first session is all about getting to know you beyond the paperwork. I want to understand who you are, what brought you to therapy, what challenges you're facing, and what you hope to gain from our time together. We will talk about your concerns, explore your goals, and begin identifying areas where you'd like to see change. By the end of our first session, my goal is for you to feel heard, understood, and more comfortable with the therapy process. We will collaborate together to develop a plan that fits your needs, your goals, and your pace.

Strengths

I believe one of my biggest strengths is my ability to make people feel comfortable, even when discussing uncomfortable topics. I bring my authentic self into every session, combining humor, empathy, honesty, and a little tough love when needed. I'm not here to tell you what you want to hear, but to help you discover what you need to hear in a way that feels supportive rather than judgmental. I enjoy helping clients connect the dots, see situations from different perspectives, and recognize patterns they may not have noticed before. I also believe in celebrating the small victories because progress isn't always about making big changes overnight.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is someone who may feel overwhelmed by life's challenges, struggles with anxiety, self-doubt, relationship difficulties, or managing their emotions, and is ready to gain a better understanding of themselves. You may feel stuck in unhealthy patterns, find yourself overthinking situations, putting everyone else's needs before your own, or simply trying to figure out your next chapter in life.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients better understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence their everyday experiences. My approach is practical, conversational, and collaborative. Rather than simply telling you to think positively, we'll explore the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, challenge unhelpful though patterns, and develop healthier ways to respond to life's challenges. I will encourage you to look at situations differently, challenge yourself when needed, and practice strategies you can use outside of our sessions. My goal is to help you develop greater self-awareness, confidence, and the tools to handle difficult situations more effectively.

Attachment-based

I believe our past experiences and relationships can shape how we see ourselves today, connect with others, and respond to life's challenges. Using an attachment-based approach, I help clients explore how earlier relationships and emotional experiences may influence their current patterns, including difficulties with trust, fear of abandonment, setting boundaries, and expressing their needs to others. My approach is about understanding how certain patterns developed and recognizing that they don't have to define a person's future. Together, we'll explore what may be keeping you stuck, build greater emotional awareness, and develop healthier ways to connect with yourself and others.

Narrative

I believe everyone has a story, but sometimes the experiences we've had or the things we've been told can shape how we see ourselves. Through Narrative Therapy, I help clients explore those stories, challenge the labels they've placed on themselves, and recognize that their past experiences don't have to determine their future. My approach focuses on helping you separate who you are from the challenges you're facing. Just because you've struggled with something doesn't mean it defines you. Together, we'll explore the beliefs and experiences that have influenced your perspective, recognize strengths you may have overlooked, and work toward creating a story that better reflects the person you are and who you want to become.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

Sometimes, growth begins when we learn to accept the things we cannot change while finding the courage to change the things we can. Through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), I help clients develop a healthier relationship with their thoughts and emotions rather than allowing fear, self-doubt, or past experiences to dictate their decisions. Together, we'll explore what truly matters to you, identify what's keeping you stuck, and work toward making choices that align with the life you want to create. My approach is genuine, compassionate, and straightforward. I believe it's okay to have difficult days, uncomfortable emotions, and moments when you don't have all the answers.

Compassion-Focused

We can be our own worst critics, often holding ourselves to expectations we would never place on someone else. I believe that learning to give yourself the same grace, patience, and understanding you offer others is an important part of personal growth. Through Compassion-Focused Therapy, I help clients recognize patterns of self-criticism, work through feelings of guilt or shame, and develop a healthier relationship with themselves. My approach is about understanding where those critical thoughts come from, learning how to respond to difficult emotions, and recognizing that your mistakes and struggles don't define who you are. I also believe that compassion and accountability can exist together. I'll encourage you to be honest with yourself, take responsibility where needed, and challenge the patterns that may be holding you back, without beating yourself up in the process.
