Does life, work, or family situations have you stressed, anxious, or depressed? Or is something from the past just refusing to stay buried? Then look no further! I love getting into all of the surface and all of the deep, dark things with my clients and do so in a warm, accepting, positive, and non-judgmental space. In this space, I LOVE hearing people's stories, and from these stories, I can help you close chapters and create new ones. Hello, my name is Jenica ( JEN i kuh, like Jessica, but with an "n" instead of "ss") and I've been therapist since Sept 1, 2011. I'm licensed in AL, WI, MD, DC, and DE, with my home base in Alabama currently. I'm grateful to have lived in the Southeast (where I'm from), the Intermountain West, and the Midwest, and traveled around the world, where I have gained beautiful and rich experiences from so many different cultures and peoples. I feel my travels have given me unique perspectives not just about the world but also how each of us fit so beautifully and perfectly into the world.
In our first session (after intake), I want to start where you want to start! If you're not sure, I will gladly take the lead. Most importantly, I want you to feel as comfortable and safe as possible and know that this is a space with no judgment. I generally like to start with introductions, learning about what brings you in for therapy, and organically getting to know each other. You are also welcome to ask me any questions, too, as transparency is very important to me and most of my clients.
Having worked in many different settings with many different clients, I am comfortable with many different people, cultures, and situations. Because of this, I feel I have developed a strong ability to capture the many facets of a client's life and background and tailor that story into an individualized therapy plan. Because I am always learning, just as we are all always learning, I am comfortable asking questions of a client if I don't understand something about them, their culture, their unique situation, or anything else that may arise. I am always willing to learn and grow right alongside my clients.
I love working with a variety of adults 18+ to geriatric. I enjoy serving those experiencing mood disorders, trauma, family conflict, those going through life transitions, bipolar disorders, and victims of narcissism. No matter the situation, I believe that we all have the power within ourselves to heal, though we may need help at times to find that power. This is where I feel I come in to help! My clients often feel like they have come to a part of their lives where they simply don't know what else to do to feel better. They've tried things on their own with little or no success. Some have tried therapy before, some have not, and either way, they feel like nothing is helping. In addition to needing practical skills, all of my clients want to feel heard and seen. I feel this is the backbone for any therapeutic work to be done and have lasting impacts.
I have been using CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) since day one of my career, September of 2011! It is a largely-encompassing approach that can be applied to many different kinds of people and situations. However, I'm a believer in making a treatment method fit the client, not the client fit the method. Thus, I want to explore how each person's thoughts drive their feelings and behaviors and illicit change from an individualized approach.
I have been using Mindfulness techniques personally and professionally since before I started my first day of internship in graduate school in 2010. I have found that it compliments CBT beautifully and can stand just as strong on its own, as its own approach. I have also discovered that Mindfulness is one of the most far-reaching therapeutic methods, as it can span and adapt to almost any culture, creed, religion, or region of the world.
I have been using Trauma-Focused CBT within the trauma framework since 2013. I feel it's important for a client's healing journey to understand the thoughts that are a result of their trauma so as to modify those thoughts into something more reasonable and empowering. Even though I feel it's an important part of trauma healing, I often use it in conjunction with other modalities. This couples well with Mindfulness, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Internal Family Systems, or Narrative Therapy.
I have been using REBT for the vast majority of my career. Being a close partner to CBT, it goes well with CBT principles, though focusing on how our values affect our thoughts, feelings, and decisions. This can be incorporated in many settings and situations, such as depression, anxiety, anger issues, and family conflict.
Faith-based therapy has always been in my repertoire. Being a faith-based person myself, specifically Christian, I have counseled Christians, Jews, Muslims, Pagans (Norse and other), Wiccans, as well as those not of any specific faith or philosophy. I have witnessed over my years that one's faith or life philosophy can be an incredible pool of strength to draw from and can be combined with many other therapeutic approaches.
