Edsel Mitchell

LMFT (he/him)12 years of experience

I am a therapist who believes in teaching, supporting, and guiding individuals to find answers and solutions to help themselves. One of my goals as a therapist is to give the individual the knowledge, skills and abilities to improve his or her self-esteem. I am a Veteran and have been around the world and worked with individuals from many places. This exposure in life and my experience as a therapist has led me to identify self-esteem being the number one cause of why most individuals struggle with such things as addiction, depression, and anxiety. I view the problem primarily with anyone struggling as a self-esteem reason and depression, anxiety, substance abuse, etc. as symptoms. Treating the problem decreases the symptoms in a simplistic manner of speaking, human thoughts and feelings are more complex than that, but you must start somewhere.

Strengths

My life experiences have made me realize that it does not matter where you come from, we all have the same goals. Those goals are to be happy, feel safe, feel loved, roof over our head, food in the belly, and to be able to provide for our families. We are all humans, that is our identity. When looking at life this way it is easier to have compassion and empathy for others. Because of this I believe in getting to know someone and identifying strengths and coping skills. I then work on identifying thoughts and how they may be impacting emotions and how to restructure those thoughts.

Ideal clients

Ideal client would be a client who is ready for a change, committed to putting in the work in session and outside session. Therapy will not work if clients do not take what they learned in session and apply it outside session. People heal themselves; therapists teach and support clients in healing themselves. Be able and ready to explore themselves and how their thoughts and feelings may be affecting them.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I first start by exploring with the client about what brings them to therapy and then discuss what would help them to achieve their goals. After that I would work on teaching healthy coping skills followed by teaching to identify how thought are negatively affecting then and the restructuring thought.
