New to Grow
Hello! My name is Kara Michelle Karr and I am an experienced Licensed Professional Counselor who loves working with people to help them improve their lives, work toward goals and feel better! It is an honor and a privilege to work with each individual. Everyone is unique and has their own reasons for getting into counseling. I am currently providing telehealth counseling to individuals from anywhere in Virginia.
In our first session, I would love to hear what is bringing you into counseling at this time and learn more about you. I will also make sure I have an understanding of your past experiences in counseling, including what has been helpful and what has not. I want to hear what you are hoping to get out of this experience, including hopes or goals you have. Also - it is your session - so use it how you want to. If it feels best to just talk and take the session where you want it to go, that is fine. If you want me to facilitate more, I am happy to do so. This is just the beginning of our journey working together.
My approach to counseling begins with using all the years of experience I have had as a counselor as a touching point for all I do. I have seen what is effective. In combination with the insight and awareness I have gained, I listen to you! You are the expert on you. You are the one who chooses the goals you have.
I really care about all my clients. It is so exciting when someone is able to take even the smallest of steps in the direction they want to go in. I am a champion of my client's growth and happiness. I feel that with all my experience I am well equipped to work with anyone who is willing to show up to sessions and have an honest desire to be open.
Other specialties
I identify as
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
It is great to help clients feel empowered to create healthy boundaries with others and be able to manage difficult emotions when they come up. We can all use those types of coping skills in life.
Attachment-based
Our current relationships sometimes are impacted by our original relationships with family and past experiences in friendships or romantic relationships. This treatment method helps clients heal from some of the original wounds and build healthy and secure relationships in the present.
Motivational Interviewing
This method really highlights my beliefs of respecting the client and working with the client as a guide to help them discover their own intrinsic motivation and reasons for behavioral change. It helps the client look at what keeps them stuck and also helps them to move toward their goals.
